Default Removing a cowl vent

Before I start this project I thought I would ask. So here goes

The two arms under the dash the go from the cowl leaver to the cowl vent it self have broken. There is a privet pont were the lowered arm are contacted to upper arms. It looks like the were connected by a rivet. It is the rivets on each side that look like they have broken off. I was thinking that I could replace them with a bolt. Does the cowl vent come out and if so is it as easy as on screwing the bolts from below. Any info would help or has anyone had this same issue and how did you fix it.

Put a couple of bolts in the holes and see if it works.

In 1939 Ford went from rivets to bolts.
Much easier to work with.

remove what is left of the rivits--be sure to keep the brass washers that separate the steel parts. I fixed a 35 cowl vent by using bolts with a smooth shank, a lock nut to adjust the tightness of the travel on the arms

I too replaced the broken rivet connection with a small screw with a shoulder.

Here's the underside of a 35/36 cowl that might help.

Don Rogers, Thank you for posting that picture of the cowl vent mechanism. I have been trying to find just such a picture. I have a 30 model A coupe someone installed a 36 cowl vent in, but it is not "hooked up" and is not functional. maybe now I can round up the missing parts and make it work.-----Jim

well i go the cowl vent out of the car and half of the bracket. unfortunately the studs are stuck on the brecket that is welded under the dash. I tried to chisel them out no luck. I am going to try to grind them out but i hate doing that under the dash. this well have to be next weekend project.

Jacob: Just wondering what year car you're working on re: cowl vent.
If it's a 40 this might help.

Don: Thanks for posting that picture. I don't recall right off exactly who sent me that picture for "the book", but that is one of the better pictures I ever received. I love it. So clear and detailed. Whoever it was that sent it to me, a big THANK YOU.
