Re: 59AB Cooling System Advice Needed from the Experts (not an overheating issue)
Throwing out ideas;
I'm seeing head and head bolt sealing issues. Oil migrating up from the bolt holes and causing the sooting contamination. Pumping that much oil into the combustion chambers after just 500 miles is going to cause some major issues down the road. It's quite evident you are pulling a vacuum on those head bolts during the intake stroke. Ass-u-me[ing] you are pulling a vacuum on the head bolts [intake stroke] it's logical you are over pressuring the cooling system on the power stroke. You presented 2 pictures that show the leakage of the head bolt holes. I have to agree with previous posters, using a "stock" configured gasket moving the fire/sealing ring toward the bore. I really don't think you have any major problems, just sealing issues. |

Re: 59AB Cooling System Advice Needed from the Experts (not an overheating issue)
As to the cooling question... My 36 runs with plenty of coolant in the large top tank, like an inch over the tubes. In 10+ years nothing has ever come out of the rad cap area or overflow tube. Assume I'm charmed with that combo.
My 35 with a very fresh redone stock radiator (small top) will not tolerate fluid above the tubes when cool. Freaks me out, but the expansion brings it up over the tubes while at operating temps and it doesn't shed fluid. That '35 with the old engine and rad (I replaced both last fall) also didn't like fluid above the tubes. I kept topping up, and it kept pissing it out. Since that combination is gone, and I have a fresh engine and fresh rad, I put fluid in, and run it. About 1K miles on the new combo and I stopped checking the level cuz the gauge never goes over the N in NORMAL on the glass sight temp gauge and nothing is coming out at the radiator cap area or the overflow tube. Hope this helps.

I believe that I was drawing a small amount of coolant into the combustion chamber (as could be seen by the small areas of steam cleaned piston tops and head areas), and more so pushing combustion gasses out through the coolant passages (causing the over pressurizing of the cooling system and subsequent blowing out coolant from the overflow tank). Definitely a head sealing issue. So, on my next attempt, I plan on using Best brand Graphite gaskets (perhaps the small bore version? I'm thinking about calling the gasket manufacturer to discuss this). During my last assembly with Best brand copper gaskets, I torqued the Eddie Meyer aluminum heads to 40 ft/lbs (per recommendations I've seen here and elsewhere e.g. VanPelt Sales website) using the center out sequence. I used Permatex Aviation Form a Gasket sealant on the threaded portion of the bolts, and a thin smear of anti-seize on the shank (to prevent them from seizing to the aluminum heads). Do I need to do anything differently? |

I torqued my aluminum heads to 50-55 as recommended by Edelbrock(using Edelbrock heads)
I think 40 is a tad low IMHO |

Tangled, I'd be interested in your engine rebuild. Here or other. |

To me if you did a .080 over regular head gaskets are fine. Not really a over bore. But you have some burnt out areas of the copper gasket. Try a composite. I run a copper on a .060 over. No issues, I probably run a bit lean sometimes and heavy others. Plugs tell me.
It'd be weird if you had a iron/copper/aluminum reaction that quick. Assuming you have aluminum heads from previous post. . Last edited by Tinker; 07-07-2019 at 10:59 PM. |
