Default Side timing cover question

So I just purchased this diamond a block. It looks like a Richmond ford number. I am wondering what the aluminum side timing cover is for. It looks like some sort of accessory but I do not know. Any help appreciated.

Why did Ford go to the trouble to mount a magneto here when Wico, Scintilla, and others manufactured magnetos that fit into the location Ford designed for the distributor? For a stationary engine, I don't see the need, ...however in aero-applications where redundant ign. systems are used, or in later racing applications with OHV heads installed, side-drives were popular in use.

Perhaps a magneto would have a problem with too much heat if mounted in place of the distributor?

Wico, Bendix, International, Eiseman and such magnetos only need 2 mounting stud or bolts, so I doubt the original intent was for a magneto. It looks like a u-joint bolt pattern???

45 years ago, I purchased a model A driven generator and it had a governor mounted on it that looked about like the one in the photo. The A Ford/generator was set up as a portable arc welder. I used the engine in our 1930 AA stake bed.
