Default Eng work on Canadian '48 in car

Hi all; The '48 Canadian 114X had USA cylinder heads, always bugged me, so when a water pump locked up the work began--- New Fryer pumps, Bubba dist, and replace those heads with correct 7RA Canadian heads. So far easy-peezy. Found the eng still showed cyl hone marks, no ridge and a stock 3 3/16" bore! Best of all it is a factory relieved block! Were all 46-48 Canadian engs factory relieved?? I'll have to open some core engs someday. also the trapizoid water passage evident in this '48 eng. Eng and trans were gray in both my Canadian '48s. Both original vehicles! At one time I had 4 Canadian Fords/Mercurys- down to two and may be down to one to finance my '40 cpe addiction. enjoy photos Newc

Check the top of the bell housing should it have 3 outlets it is likely an army motor . and would have had the relieved valve area .These motors were the very best much harder than the standard. Some truck motors were also relieved .It was claimed those motors with the relieve had greater luging power. The third outlet on the bell was for a full flow of oil and was used on a oil cooler

Newc, That's a '41 239 engine, easily identified by the 19 cast into block in front of #1 cylinder

'41....!!! 239". Well a replacement in this 114X Explains a lot, Thanks so much now it's really Touring class. And all I have are the C7RA heads so that will be it. Might as well go dual exhaust too. This eng should be in the '42 Blitz', it's got an 8ba . thanks Newc

Hi Newk,

I have two C69A (1946) Canadian blocks neither are factory relieved and were truck applications. See attached. I once had a C99A (1939) block ex army truck that was factory relieved.

Of interest they appear to have been Ford Blue originally. Often in Australia when they were reconditioned they were repainted grey. I'm in two minds to repaint the working one Ford blue but engine grey will do for now.

Glad you got the rubber shift boots also!

Cheers,

More fun with Canadian engs; The engine in the 114X is military surplus, all points checked out. Then I checked my spare cores [3] and they are all C-59 blocks with the third oil port!! My lucky day. One of the cores was the original engine from a late '47 mfg M-47 ['48] pickup. So now I can put the correct eng in the 'Blitz' some day. thanks All for the motavation. Newc
