Default '46 Mercury Bumper Wing tips

I have a nice original '46 Mercury that does not have bumper wing tips on the ends of the bumpers. At a swap meet recently, a gentleman who has restored a number of '46-'48 Mercurys said that all Mercurys came with wing tips as standard equipment. It looks to me like the outer bumper bolts on my car have never been disturbed.

Does anyone know for certain if they were standard equipment? I frankly don't care for the look of them.

Thanks

Here's an ad for a '46, and they are absent.

If you google 1946 Mercury and then click on images, you'll see all kinds of Mercs with and without the wings. I'm with you, and think they look better without the wings. Sometimes a car can have too many "geegaws". Seems like many cars of the era had them as options but I don't believe they were standard on all models. Just my opinion.

Bruce,

Like Ford, I believe Mercury also offered the bumper tips as accessory items. Steve

Gents,

Thanks for your replies. I didn't think they were standard, but the fellow I talked to was pretty firm that they all came with them.

Those things were the second item I put in the trash when I bought my 47 Merc.............................................. ..in 1967. Still have the car, no regrets about the wing tips

That would be like saying they all came with white wall tires... They (bumper tips) were featured in the Dealer's Accessory Catalog, not a stock item but a Ford approved accessory, to be sold by the dealerships. A chance for them to generate additional revenue on a sale.
