Default Flathead Water Pump

A buddy called me earlier today and his right hand water pump is leaking. The engine is in a Model A and he has no idea what year. I haven’t seen the pump or engine myself so I’m going on what he has told me. He says these numbers are cast into the pump housing 8C 460-1-RK. Does this narrow down what year he has in attempt to order a new pump.

Thanks in advance for any support you all have to offer.

A picture of the engine would help. Also a close up of the water pump.

Yes a picture would help tremendously but as I described above I havent seen the engine or pump. I’m hoping someone can tell me what pump he has by the numbers I listed that’s in the casting. I’m trying to save myself a 2 hour drive to look at what he has. He’s technically challenged and does not use cell phone or computers. Yes he’s old and lives in a cave.

Damn. Must be hell to get old.
I have a long ways to go, I’m only 83!
I would think a 50 through 53 pickup water pump would be the only one that would do the job. They sit on a donut motor mount same as 32 to 48 cars.
The 49 n later cars had a weird water pump n motor mount assembly.. The water pumps were also the motor mount part that bolts to the engine.

He could always send the pump to Skip and have it rebuilt then you don't need to know what it is. And from what I hear about Skip he is a phone only type of guy, so should work out great!

He did say it sat in a doughnut style mount. I have a pair of pumps for my 40, probably end up taking them to him and see if that what he has.

Yes he’s older than dirt , he’s 80

VanPelts shows a 8CM style being for 49 Mercury. If Mac doesn’t stumble apron this thread I may call him tomorrow and get his opinion as to what the casting numbers tell us.

I think "Branded" is correct in saying it is a late Mercury pump. Your friend should be able to tell us if it's a narrow or wide belt, which should help us narrow it down.

The number on the casting could be something used by an aftermarket manufacturer......it’s not a Ford number that I recognize. The pumps generally used on 49-53 late style flatheads in a Model A would be the 48-52 truck pumps or the 49-51 Mercury pumps. The “8C” prefix suggests that they were for the truck but pictures (or a better description) would be most helpful. Of course, the 49 Mercury pumps had a “8CM” prefix so it could also refer to those. You could compare them to images from our website to confirm.

If his pumps are Mercury, he’ll have to get them rebuilt as nobody has reproduced them yet. The truck pumps are available brand new, or can be rebuilt. We stock the truck pumps and the rebuild kits. He could also have Skip rebuild them if he prefers.

Do the '49-'51 Merc pumps have the "L" leg higher on the pump body which would cause motor to sit lower or necessitate a pad of sorts to go on top of the biscuit to raise it back up?

Yes. The "U" bracket is about 1 7/8" high. I think an earlier version was more rubber than metal, possibly early '49.

Attached are photos of both style Merc pump spacers as well as a photo of a narrow belt Merc pump showing the mounting tab that is higher than an 8rt wide belt truck pump.

Difficulty loading photos is often because the file size is over the limit. If you want me to upload them email them to me: [email protected]

The pictures are probably too large. Downsize them and re-try to post.

Not sure what computer/tablet/phone your using but if you crop the picture it will usually upload, I downloaded the dumbest photo editing software I could find for my iPad and only use the crop function, lets me upload picture after that.

Not sure dumb is the correct term here, you need a program to do it with. With mircosoft platforms there are some ways to do it, but I'm not a fan of any of them. There are some photo editing programs you can download that work much better IMO. If you are trying to upload from a photo, same issue, just requires different programs. There are some ways around this, such as when you attach a photo file to a text message it is automatically resized, same with some email attachments.
