Default Axle position 34 ford

I would like to know the axle position on a 34. Is the axle in front of or behind the spring? I know it is not directly under it like a Model A.

The front axle is directly under the spring. See: http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/F...48-passngr.jpg
The front spring uses the same perch as '32, 40 3030.

The rear axle is in front of the spring.

Perhaps you're thinking of a '35 or later Ford where the front axle is behind the front spring.

It sounds as though you are asking about the rear axle, it is in front of the spring allowing for a lower vehicle profile.

This '34 Ford chassis lube chart may help with spring vs. axle axle location, front and rear, although the front is a little more difficult to see compared to the rear.

yep. And the springs are the same, too. Unless you get technical about the shape of the leaf ends.

Only if it is a late '34 when the spring leaf ends were changed.

Ford put the spring behind the rear axle as a progression to get their cars lower to the ground for that more streamlined look. Later they put the front spring in front of the front axle to get the front down even more.

It makes me smile that a lot of our original production cars were actually influenced by customized vehicles of the day that were lowered and given streamlined roof lines and the Ford engineers following suit to please the buyer's market.

Actually Ford moved the springs to improve the ride quality. The increase in distance between the front and back springs made a big difference in smoothing out the ride.

Yeah, they coined the term "springbase" as an extrapolation of wheelbase to sell thye better ride.

Anyway, to recap: 34 Ford front spring above axle, rear spring behind. It is a curved spring similar to a 32. if you're not familiar the term curved refers to when viewed from above like in the lube chart above.

The changes were made in 1935. Major change from 1934.

Riding comfort was the chief reason to change the spring location and size.
In 1935, Ford moved the front spring forward about 4 inches. The spring was
also made more flexible and much longer, getting the ends closer to the wheels. This resulted in a gentler springing action.

The rear spring was given the same treatment by making it longer and moving it farther back from the rear axle.
