Default Power Steering for AA Truck

Hi,

I would like to convert my 1930 Ford AA Truck with Power Steering.

I have installed a pump already and need a suitable Power Steering Box. I’m looking for something that will fit nicely. I have no problem to fabricate brackets and do machine work if necessary.

Any suggestion or input would be much appreciated.

I suggest you look into adapting a rack and pinion setup. Easier and less expensive than adapting different steering gear.

I would like to keep the original type of steering and it's probably a bit heavy for RP

After reading V8COOPMAN's post , my suggestion of early 50's Lincoln PS, would not have worked.

A power steering box from a Toyota 4x4 p/u (I believe mid '80's) is a push pull box but it might be a little wimpy for a big truck like an AA.

If I'm not wrong, I believe Model AA big trucks still had the side steering, with the drag link controlling the LEFT side spindle...not cross steering. This needs to be kept in mind when offering suggestions as xelhan wants to keep the original configuration, similar to the drawing below. Many thanks to Mac VP for the use of your drawings.

NICE truck!! DD

I wonder if the F100 steering that Randy Gross converts might be the answer, [email protected], 714-292-8660 Not power but might be enough. You might ask him if he has ever done an AA.

Also note that you are posting this thread in the 1932-53 section, not the Model A section.

You might also ask your question on HAMB, https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...ssage-board.5/

The AA uses the same box as the A.

The modern trend is to adapt an electric power steering assist into the column. UK rodder Gus put one on his A coupe. It's hard to hide the unit but it can be done neatly.

I also remember an article in street rodder where they adapted 50s Ford power steering to a push pull setup. It took a lot of work with hoses and everything but it can be done.

A simple power assist piston might work. This was one of the original Ford PS systems abd just attached to the normal steering. can't be simpler than that.

Or, use a box from a 48-53 F6. Just try one, they steer very easy and have the correct style to mate to your AA

If you don´t mind turning the steeringwheel a few more turns the F6 box would be an easy solution.
Should be 1 or 2 heavy trucks out in my yard if you need one...

A system that uses a linear control valve is the simplest to adapt.
The control valve is in the cylinder so no adaption to the steering box.
Some early Nash's had them. Many Fords had them.

Here is a Nash adapted to a race car.
It pushes on the pitman arm. The back end anchors to the frame.

Vickers made them , they were on lots of small trucks and tractors here.
all you need is the pump and the unit to the drag link or replaces the drag link.

I prefer the Nash. It only has 2 hoses and when installed it is behind the running board apron on a model A, out of sight.
