Toyota Cellica steering box
Just alittle information for those with some clearance problems installing a flathead in a model A or some other problem The Cellica box has the input shafr on the rail side of the stearing arm, thus moving the box 2" away from the exhaust. The Ford pitman fits the output shafr and the Chevy rag jount the input shaft. Am using one on the roadster. Yep a picture would be great. Working on that.

Re: Toyota Cellica steering box
The ones I see look like they are for cross steer. Is that the way you are setting up your car?

Re: Toyota Cellica steering box
Yes, cross searing is far superior than the old drag link styl . I often wondered why it stayed on th trucks for so long.

42 to 47 ford pickups were cross stear along with the 35 to 41. The chassis under a 42 to 47 is basically the same as the 48 to 52 but that was changed back to drag link in 48. Big trucks I guess stayed with a drag link for clearance and strength |

Re: Toyota Cellica steering box
Skid marks, my 32 has cross steer and had the same movement so I put on a panhard Bar that fixed the movement. Dave

Re: Toyota Cellica steering box
The Ford "Buggy"Spring suspension system has a few issues and if you know about them, you can get around them.
First to improve ride the shekels should be be vertical, oe near so. This causes the Cassie to sway back and forth when driving and steering . Thus the pan hard bar. Now to prevent roll when cornering , a roll bar is installed.. All this extra "Stuff" is aesthetically un pleasing, so we run the shekels at a 45 deg angle and settle for a hard ride. |

Re: Toyota Cellica steering box
How close to the front crossmember did you mount the steering box? The one I got has it mounted close to were the stock steering box was and you can see the rail flex when steering the car with it sitting still.
32 has a heavier frame rail then a model A . |

Re: Toyota Cellica steering box
I'll have to take some more pics and videos of the front end showing the steering system, it's quite simple. In our case the front motor mount was the issue so I used 53 ford PU pumps. Building a complete Chassis is complicated, and your forced to make concessions. In my case, I can't do that when it comes to the suspension. IN other areas, not so much. At present the chassis is at the welders, when it comes back, we'll be assembling it. That will be the time to make the final decisions.
Yesterday a fellow from Mass. drove up to deliver the late wishbones, it's people like this that makes this project so great. I hope the trunk is big enough for all their names.. One of them offered a 284 ci L-100 engine for the first testing. Should be interesting. |

Well 847 people checked out this thread. It Might belong on the HAMB, but why deny the ford barn people of something that might help keep their OLD FORD ON THE ROAD

Re: Toyota Cellica steering box
Yer preachin' to the choir Ron. Bought my first toyota pickup 47 years ago and have had one ever since. They make excellent gear assemblies such as steering boxes. Hidden way down against the frame, who really cares it's there but a Pebble Beach judge? I have been watching a current thread entitled 'Correct bed hold down strips' and all manner of hot rod style stainless steel bed strips have been discussed and sources for them etc. Correct? Not even close. A modern, safe and readily available steering box, economically sourced from a salvage yard should be shared with this flock. Going to look into one for my anything but stock, plain jane, homemade woodie wagon.

Re: Toyota Cellica steering box
I'm a Toyota truck fan. Had a 1999 tacoma trd 3.5 that would smoke most trucks. It weighed very little and would wind up to 7 grand. Super fun little truck!. it had trouble pulling a trailer, as the two axle trailer through it around though.
Those old 70s toyota trucks with tractor gears are very sought-after. A vega wouldn't work? Last edited by Tinker; 03-05-2019 at 12:30 AM. |

Re: Toyota Cellica steering box
At my age, it's my job to keep these old Ford running any way I can. T present the cost of keeping them running is getting out of site with the stock stuff, so alittle ingenuity is needed.
