Default Starter Bendix spring

Is there supposed to be a small spring between the starter gear and the collar that is at the end of the acme threads of the starter gear to keep the starter gear from potentially vibrating forward and running into the flywheel while its running? Ive seem some with and without.

Here is a thread with some pictures.

The new replacement units have the small spring, the older units have a spiral groove..
