So is this pick up a 29 or a 30 ?

Bob Williams in Carleton Va. had a original 1930 AA Dump Truck that he bought from the owner in Poquoson Va. Bob seen this truck when he was a child in Poquoson in the 30s and 40s. It had a 1930 truck body, 1930 type gas cap, 1930 hood and grill with 1929 fenders. This truck, from what we had seen was as built by ford in 1930 and had never been altered. Ford never wasted a scrap, look at the history of Kingsford charcoal.

Before you can tell someone that it is or isn't an Early 1930 you have to know that they did exist and how to spot them. The cab change didn't take place until June 1930. So all of the early 1930's used the 1929 style sheet metal yet had all the 1930 chassis improvements. Right off hand I can see it has 1930 steering wheel. Check to see that it also has the '30 steering.The side view mirror is mounted mid way on the door post. Later made Early '30's had a twist lock gas cap instead of a screw on. The used 1930 style headlamps that are painted black. Everything I see in your pictures show me that this is an Early 1930.

So it arrived last night and today after work was able to wash it, (photo attached) and take on first trip downtown. It is really great. My first question is, this large, vinyl covered top, is that stock to pickups? Not a big fan, and would like to put on a metal one that I have seen on 1930 cars. Will one of those bolt right up? All comments and opinions welcome.

Also did I see a post where it is suggested to not use an air filter? There is one on here, truck runs like a top as is...

Air filter opinions are are all over the place. With out expressing my personal opinion on if they are OK/not OK, run the truck and inspect the plugs - if the plugs are not fouling then I would leave the air filter on.


However if the air filter is just a paper filter and hangs below the carb, you might consider switching to an oiled element K and N filter. Reason for not running a pure paper filter is if the float bowl over fills gas can end up in the paper filter and is a fire hazard.

The last time I saw it I do not remember that type of air cleaner on the pickup.

And yes, the 1928-May 1930 Open Cabs had the vinyl tops just as you have.

Just remember, if you happen to sell it down the line, and the top was chastized and replaced with a metal top...God Forbid...good luck. It is your pickup now...do what you want but if it were me...I would not touch it unless you have plans to hot rod it...ouch!

If me would purchase the cleaning oil kit and clean/re-oil it. Supposedly the K and N has enough volume capacity that it does not restrict air flow into the carb. Restricting the airflow will cause the carb to run rich and you also may loose a small amount of power if running a restrictive air cleaner. That is why above I mentioned checking your plugs.

Some also air balance the carb when running an air filter. Only way to tell is to take the carb off split the carb, and inspect. Supposedly air balancing is not required if running a large volume intake non/r-restrictive air filter.
