Default Shade tree test

If alternator is working, should I be able to remove one battery terminal and the motor will continue running on the alternator output?

yes, but it will not give you an idea of its true output. It doesn't take much to work the ignition system.

A decent quality voltmeter will tell you volumes about the condition of the charging system and battery. Check battery voltage before you start the car, engine running at idle speed, engine RPM at cruising speed, and after 10 minutes of cruising speed RPM.
