Default Identifying Shocks

How do you identify a "new" shock that is sealed and doesn't require oil vs an original rebuild that should be topped off?

The shock shown in your photo was likely manufactured by Peter Buciak "Vendor", Antique Auto and Parts by PETE Superior St. Chicago.

Here is a link to a previous thread about these shocks:

Look at the stamping, if they say Made in Chicago, then they are Pete's shocks.

Can you pull a shock lever and post a photo of the cover, by the looks of your photo, the Patent # does not seem to match Pete's shocks.

If I remember correctly aren't the shock bodies of Pete's shocks made of Brass?

Or maybe its another repro shock that is brass.

Here are a few more (not all the same shock). Looks like Pat# 108701. I only see made in the USA - not Chicago.

Matt,

Probably good news, according to the Restoration Guidelines and Judging Standards, you have the Second Style Ford Shock, February 1928 thru July 1928.

Patent # 1087017 is the original Houdaille Patent.

Thanks so much - I never thought to look in the judging standards. The motor is a Jan 28. Since those are not sealed, I can go ahead and top them all off and adjust them.
