Re: John Deer Corn grease --- ugh
Has the grease gun in question ever had a cartridge in it? If not it might not be made to accept them. I have a few guns that predate the availability of grease cartridges, they needed to be filled from bulk.
And if you think cartridge guns suck to use, non cartridge guns are 5X worse. |

Re: John Deer Corn grease --- ugh
Just for the record the Corn Head Grease cartridges come in 14 oz which equates to 396 grams. The OD of the cartridge is 52mm. USA
Our normal grease here in NZ comes in 450 grams NZ. Grease Cartidge OD 59mm. Our standard grease gun which is accepts cartridges is sized for this. Hence my comment that the John Deere Corn Head grease cartridge will not work in our grease guns. As the add says fits most grease guns. But down under to use the John Deere cartridge grease requires the smaller dia body grease gun. Likewise for US gallons verses Imperial gallons to litres for petrol/gasoline. Phil NZ |

Re: John Deer Corn grease --- ugh
The cartridge od is exact same size as the od of the grease gun.
I propped it upon top of grease gun & then popped silver top of tube. Letting it drain into gun. This however, got sloppy as the grease started to backup (guess air) in gun. When I go to JD for more, I will purchase their gun.

Re: John Deer Corn grease --- ugh
To add to this discussion. I bought a bunch of v8 and A parts from an estate several years ago which included a 30-31 steering gear and column. I opened it up and found the internals to be new and then found that the column was full of grease. What a way to make sure the top worm bearing is lubed!

Re: John Deer Corn grease --- ugh
Sounds like you have a grease gun designed for bulk refills.

Re: John Deer Corn grease --- ugh
A question : the corn head grease is used in areas of the combine head that the grease can surround the parts turning and can work well .a good place to use it on an old ford is the Universal joint as the joint turns the grease tends to throw out ward ,but this grease then tends to re flow to keep the joint coated . Now my concern using it in the steering box ; is that the sector shaft fits tightly into two bushings, can this grease be thin enough to lub these bushings especially the outer one. John.

Don't use it in your tranny or rear end that is a different application. If they are leaking, fix that leak. |

Seth, how hot does it need to be to flow, like 90W gear lube for example? Are we talking 100F or 250F? I have never checked the temp on my steering box. It doesn't seem like there's much friction but I expect there is significant load during bump-steer events and I am wondering about film strength, replacement, as it is sheared in the sector or worm gears. |
