Re: transmission for behind flathead
Well, that is the basic light duty OD trans Ford used for a number of years in the fifties.
or open drive, probably a reasonable choice. |

Re: transmission for behind flathead
You don't say what flathead, early or late, but selling the T86 and getting a bolt-on would probably make sense and be cheaper than adapting. Either early or late can use the '49 merc type OD trans with one or another combination of common parts, and of course the late can easily take the various versions of '49-53 OD transmissions.
The T86 does not have any huge advantages over those...it is still a 3 peed OD with probably very similar ratios and is not a super strong trans either. |

Re: transmission for behind flathead
Thanks Bruce, I will take your advice and tell him to shop around. The only advantage here is that he owns the T86

Re: transmission for behind flathead
The T86...if it's from a 50's Ford....should have the same 4 bolt mounting pattern as any 49-59 three speed Ford trans. This means that the 49-51 Ford stamped steel bell housing, or the 52-53 Ford cast iron bell housing, will accept the T86. Double check the opening of the bell and compare that size to the diameter of the front bearing retainer on the T86. I think they're the same. The input shaft will be the same 1" ten spline as any 49-57 Ford 3 speed. This means the clutch must have the 1" ten spline hub. That can be either a 9-1/2" or a 10" diameter clutch disc.
The other potential problems to evaluate are the rear support location on the tail housing, and the relationship of the OD solenoid & governor to any frame structure on the vehicle. Obviously, this will only work on an open driveshaft application.

Re: transmission for behind flathead
If the engine is a '49 & up Ford or '50 & up Merc with original bell housing, the transmission is a bolt on.

Re: transmission for behind flathead
I dug through my hoard this morning and found a stamped bell and yes it does fit. I will talk to my buddy and see if this is the way he wants to go.
The engine is an 8ba 276 and he is well past his hot rod days so maybe this trans will work for him. Thanks to all. Bill |
