dual exhaust on 40 coupe

Does anyone have an easy way for dual exhaust on a 40 Ford since the clutch linkage blocks the hole in the frame where the exhaust should go through on left side?

It can be done through that hole, but takes a lot of custom bending and welding, I did it on a 47, it was tight.

Yes, it goes through the hole. It helps to use small pipe. I bought a '40 30+ years ago and it had 1 1/2" pipe through that area, but the guy that put it on my '38 used 1 3/4" pipe and it worked well.

It looks to me like clutch pedal arm crosses over the majority of the hole when de-pressing the clutch. Is a 39 clutch pedal different than a 40? If the lower section of the pedal was straighter it probably would not be an issue.

I have Speedway headers on my '40 with duals and the pipe on the left side runs through the stock hole and there's no problem. You need to find a good muffler shop. I've never bought "kit exhaust".

My '38 had a '39 pedal assembly in it when I got it and the pipe went through the hole. I changed the pedal assembly to a '40 with the equalizer bar, still no problem.

This is a good muffler shop. I looked at it myself and I see no way. I've built many cars and have had tight exhaust issues but this clutch arm crosses the frame hole. A 39 clutch arm is straight and may give more clearance but with the 40 arm no way. I don't think a 39 clutch arm will fit a 40 though.

You need to find a different shop.

Installing dual exhaust on both '39 and '40 Fords has only been done a million times.
If done nicely, it appears as if the factory did it. Clutch linkage is not an issue for either year.

Back in the 60's I put duals on my 40 with a kit from western auto and had no clearance problems.

There is no way a pipe will fit through the hole. When the pedal is depressed it sits across the hole mid way. You are also dealing with the clutch shaft that goes from frame to clutch pivot. 39 does not have that. 39 also has a straight arm below the toe board. 40 has a slight curve. I have looked at a 39 and it has more room for the pipe then a 40. The car is stock other then an AB engine. I know this conversion can and has been done several times and something is being overlooked. You would be hard pressed to fit a 1" pipe through and around the hole.

Kube is the 40 expert, so something must be out of place or different than normal. Have any photos?

Here are some pic's The second and 3rd are good examples of my problem. And I do know brake lines need to be moved slightly. Pic. 5 is what my arm resembles but mine has the correct number O1A7520A. Picture 6 and 7 is what what it is supposed to look like. I need to go back tomorrow and confirm this.

Has anyone noticed how far the clutch lever comes down into the hole in the frame where the exhaust goes through?

I put a 2" pipe through there on my 40 coupe. I (from memory) rolled the lower edge of the hole down somewhat, carefully adjusted the clutch so it did not need to go so far down, and then located the spot where the pedal hit the pipe and put a localised dent in the pupe. It worked well.

On my 41 pickup I didn't fancy doing that work, so wimped out and ran a single pipe down the right side.

Readjust your clutch and move those brake lines. Those lines are not in the correct location.

I notice that. They also appear to be 5/16 also. Headed to muffler shop now and look at that clutch pedal again. Thanks

Using an off topic engine requiring a larger diameter pipe.
I used a 2" pipe with no mods to frame or pedal in that location, still allowing clearance at the X to prevent rattles.
The pedal may 'touch' the pipe when fully depressed.

On my 40 Convertible the clutch pedal arm would touch the pipe just before the pedal reached the floor. To solve this I heated the pipe cherry red and pushed the pedal to the floor to create a small relief for the clutch arm.

I re-routed the brake line today. I also looked at a couple 40's with Flatheads. One was a little rube in that the pipe snaked under cross member and over wish bone. Very tight 1 3/4 pipe. The other was well done through the hole in cross member with 2" pipe. It was very snug but 2" will go if you know your business.

It's a tough bend, takes some time and trial and error, might depend if the shop wants to try and do it. Didn't see what exhaust manifolds you are using (stock is a bit more interesting, fentons are a bit better). But there is room.


I like 1 7/8 for that extra 1/8 inch . Some shop have it, all can order it. Little more back pressure. Not sure how available 1 3/4" is anymore?


Flathead: Bigger pipe more of that drone sound, smaller pipe more crackle. I like a good muffler to be quieter. Something I need to do as my truck is way too loud with just generic glasspacks (annoying to me)
