along the row of valves, since the valves open the other way (up for open, down for closed), are they opened by spring pressure and closed by the cam

Actually the opposite, The valves are opened up by the cam and closed by the spring pressure. The big advantage of this type of a cylinder head is airflow. It increases the performance of the Flathead which is limited by its original design. Remember also that the old valve pockets in the block will have to be sealed up for this to work.

AH, OK. I went back and looked a the picture again and I now see that the head is about 4 inches thick and that the intake and exhaust manifold bolt directly to the head, jot to the block as before. It's no longer a "flathead" as it would have a combustion chamber in the head and what could be loosely termed as over head valves. Got it. thanks

It might be an interesting engine to some or maybe even many but to me it is no longer a flathead and therefore I am not interested. I am not bashing so please nobody get upset … just expressing my opinion.

That's how I look at it as well, cool technology, but no longer a flathead.

Most overhead cams run directly on the valved. However there is a cup that fits over the valve stem and spring that slides up and down in a plate that is bolted to the head. this also holds the cam bearings and the cup rides on the lobes. What makes this desirable is the light weight of the valve assembly allows the engine to rev higher. also having two intake and exhaust valves create a
Pent roof" chamber which allows for a 'Squish" ares for increased compression. Probably the most famous engine of this type was the 4cy Offy that dominated Indy for decades.

It wouldn't "loosely" be termed as an OHV head. It is an OHV head.

FWIW, the Ford flathead engine has its combustion chamber in the head, too. The location of the combustion chamber isn't what determines whether or not an engine is considered a "flathead".
