The North American '33 lamp housing is roughly 5/8" deeper than its '34 counterpart, which is quite noticeable. Everything else is common between the two model years' one and two bulb (no cowl lights) head lamps. (There were at least two suppliers of the lamps in the U.S. and the construction of the housing foundations is somewhat different between the two without any external difference.)

With the rim removed it is 7 1/2"on the inside which corresponds to the 6 7/8" external measurement with all but the thickness of the stainless steel at the back of the lamp accounted for the inner lip that the rim mounts on.

I thought that was the depth of the '34,not the '33.I should have measured when I had my '33.

I guarantee that is the measurement for the '33s as I measured four of them just to be sure.

Great article in the March/April 2018 issue of the V-8 Times on '34-'33 Headlights and Taillights. The depth of the '34 headlight from the back of the headlight rim to the back of the headlight bucket is 6 and 1/4". The '33 headlight is 6 and 7/8". The '33 headlight is 5/8 of an inch longer or deeper.

Yes, and would be interesting - apparently the change was the idea of Eugene Gregorie, top designer in Edsel's Design Dept. The '33 was "his car", and it is because of him we enjoy it and '34. The Model A was "Edsel's car" top to bottom, as well as the '32.

Gregorie's comment to Edsel regarding design, it's a good-looking, fine car, but it's still too boxy looking. We need an overall drastic change for '33 to keep (Mr. GM) Willie Durant from biting at our heels.( Gregorie applied at GM & Walter Chrysler, but was turned away despite knowing Gregorie's yacht-design history by age 24. Upon applying at Ford, in the Design Dept, Edsel hired him immediately.

Then upon Gregorie's vacation trip to England, he became familiar with the little English Ford on their narrow streets . hmmm. If we stretched that car to US standard(s) and made it aesthetically appealing . . . That is the new Ford Edsel and I are searching our brains for.

Edsel and Gregorie were best friends and one brain. If one critiqued the other it was always much appreciated, and discussed. (they were both yacht designers prior to their Ford 'days'. ( viewing and studying an auto design w/specs one would pencil in a change w/out a word, and the other knew what the 'penciler' had in mind, and would pencil in a continuing change - no words.

(design change and anything else was NEVER discussed with Henry until the change was made and in production.

If you haven't read about Eugene Gregorie and Edsel You will much enjoy. And Willie too!

AND the Dodge Brothers - as subcontractors, they once worked for Ford making Model T front axles. Then they realized 'why are we doing this! We will design and manufacture our car! (known as Dodge Bros) read about their black 'n white, night 'n day personalities. One calm & subdued, the other a wild drinker - so much so, whe he entered a bar all knew there was goin' ta be trouble. Sure 'nuf . . .pick up a shot glass and throw it into the lengthy mirror behind the bar. The owner and barkeep "YOU'LL PAY FOR THAT!" It was paid for the following day.

Also I understand that 33 vs 34 cowl light buckets mirror the headlight differences? All reproductions are '34? Newc

The 1933 Ford Headlights are more pointed and approximately 7/8" longer than the 1934 Ford Headlights.

It's very often the case that one is bigger than the other.

Thank you Treavor, the extra length is also quite noticeable in the rivet locations of the mounting post. 33 are quite a bit further from the opening for the mounting stud.
