Default Front spring anti-squeak

Is there a strip of anti-squeak that has to go on top of the front spring, like you would put on the rear spring? Any pros or cons to putting it on anyway? Thanks Fordbarners.

None on Model A, ...just on Model T's and early V-8s. No pros or cons due to shape of the crossmember.

I reminber reading about this. Glue an eight inch piece of webbing on top of the front spring with contact cement. Cut out the area around the head of the spring center bolt (bolt head fits in the crossmember). Cover webbing with coat of grease. Install spring as usual. If I can find where I read this, I will post it. Good luck, Bill

Default I Found It

This process is mentioned in Les Andrews' Book, 'Model A Ford Mechanics Handbook' vol. 1, pp 1-278, under Installing Front Spring, item #3. It states basically as I described above. Except he said to "...glue the welting to the top leave ..." He did not mention the type of glue to use.
I think there will be plenty of people who have tried this, and can tell you if they would do it again. Good luck, Bill

But what do you gain? If the center tie-bolt is tight in the crossmember like it is supposed to be, then it can't wiggle, ...and if the the U-bolts are tight like they are supposed to be in the crossmember, what are you going to gain? The spring's arch is different on the Model A than it was on the T and it does no good to put in a spring pad. If anything, it allows for some movement which causes the car to sit slanted.

Is this a new spring? If so you need to make sure the top edges of the top leaf are beveled. you need this so that the spring will clear the rounded corners of the cross member and sit flat. Some new springs don't have this feature. More important than welting.

Besides all this...I do not believe (correct me if I am wrong) but I do not believe that Ford ever put any type of welting on either front or back spring. If so, please direct all to it's happening.

No welting, no leather, no nothing, it's not a bearing surface, it's not supposed to move in that area. I f you DO put something in there, it will wear, then you have loose spring
clamps.

Question Re: Front spring anti-squeak

Hi Desi,

When I dissasembled the spring's from the chassie 40 year's ago I seem to remmember some kind of "Material, welting ? " on top of the spring's..There wasn't much left.. Why would Ford use it on the "T" & V8 and not the A ?. Same set up as far as the spring's go ???.

I don't believe its a good idea to put anything on top of the front spring, the spring is designed to be tight in the cross member; a loose front spring effects steering and toe in and is somthing that should be checked once in a while to be sure it hasn't loosed up.
