Default Engine Click

Barners
I have had a click in front of motor, think I have found it. Th crank shaft pulley has some play in it. Can I simply tighten it up and what size socket is it.
Thanks
Dana

Is it a one or two piece pulley? It takes a "big" socket. Someone on the Barn may know what size.

If that's not it, another common cause of 'click' at the front of the engine is the Cam Thrust Plunger Spring, inside the Timing Gear Cover.

The original crankshaft pulley bolt is 1 3/8". There are a couple other size bolts that could be in it.

Be very careful when reving the engine with your face near the fan.

The original fans and even the four bladed fans have come apart. They will go right through the radiator or hood.

Bad fans make noises when getting ready to "explode".

Look at fan for cracks ... sometimes you see no cracks before they come apart.

Why not just use the crank, as if you were starting the engine by hand cranking, to tight the crank pulley nut - or did I misunderstand the question?

Thanks, the fan is a new two blade, I am pretty sure clicking is coming from crank pulley, I haven't taken it off yet. Don't know if it can be washer-ed. Has some play side and end. Started this about two weeks ago.
Thanks
Dana

It would seem like you may need a new pulley is it is loose on the crank and the nut is tight. I am no expert but just a guess.

Do you have this click when you have the fan belt off and you run the rig? If you don't have the click then, maybe it could be your generator pulley. I had a generator pulley make a clicking sound because it was a two piece pulley riveted together. The rivets had come loose.

Your idea of a washer may do the trick. Good luck.

Sometimes the bolt tightens to the crankshaft rather than the pulley. This can happen if the tin oil slinger is left out. I've also heard some repro pulleys gave this problem.

Tom, I think that is my problem. I see a one piece and a two piece pulley from suppliers which do you think is best. It doesn't make clicking sound with belt of, the sound is more of a ring click like tin. I have owned this coupe for two years and it started this about two weeks ago.
Thanks
Dana

I don't know which 2 piece repro pulley is best. Two of my engines have repro pulleys and I don't have a problem with the aluminum nor cast iron style. Both are the keyed style with 2 interlocking notches and tabs.

I would remove the bolt and see if the crankshaft sticks out more than the pulley. If it does, then make a washer to fit the pulley area only and tighten the bolt against it.

Tom, the pulley is loose on the crank plus it looks as if two half's were spot welded and they are broke apart. It am sure the pulley is making noise. Ran it with belt off. Have you ever used pulley wrench are made one.
Thanks

BlueSunoco, the pulley is split in the bottom of groove all the way around and up one side.
Making tool to pull crank nut. The pulley is made of tin. May cut it off with torch.
Thanks

I bought a box wrench from the used tool store and used an ox/acc torch to heat it and bend it. The parts houses also sell a wrench that works to remove the crank bolt.

I install the wrench and lay it against the left frame rail, then click the starter with the key off, and the bolt comes loose.

Same idea for me. I just went down to the garage to see what size it is and it's 1-3/8.

That's the wrench i picked up today, haven't put the rosebud to it yet. This pulley looks like it is two piece and riveted together are it is cracked all the way around and cracked up one side.
Thanks
Dana
