Default Casting flaw?

This is a Diamond Block with a little flaw or is this a Big weld? I never noticed this till I rolled the engine out in the sun.

I think it is the parting line between the two halves of the casting mold (cope and drag). Maybe the area was touched up with a grinder.

I have several diamond A blocks and each one has really pronounced seams, casting lines and marks. The standard A blocks I have are a much smoother casting. Not sure if it was because the diamond was more often used in an industrial type application and not finished as smoothly or if the casting process was somehow different on the diamond blocks. Just my experience but what I have seen the diamond blocks are like that. I actually used a little jb weld to smooth out some of the flaws on the diamond I just had rebuilt.

I think you'll find it's a casting flaw, I do alot of A engines and about all of them have that funny casting. Walt

Might be able to tell if you removed the paint?

Neither weld nor flaw. Looks like prints from two hollow unperfed sheet metal chaplets used to hold the lower part of the cylinder core aligned in the green sand mold. (Chaplets are sheet iron supports that dissolve in the cast iron pour.) Later production (diamond era) core changes made to produce a thinner casting in the upper area may have necessitated use of the chaplets when setting a glued core assembly. Typical and customary practice, not a defect unless surface finish is spec'ed.

This illustration shows chaplets in a vertical configuration. They are also used for horizontal alignment.
