Default NOS parts I will never use but keep .

I suppose I am not alone in that I have NOS parts which I will never use and I doubt if anyone else will ever do . I have 4 NOS AA bevel gear rear axle shafts . Brand new and still coated with thick cosmoline . My truck will never use them for sure but I keep them !!! Why do I this, am I alone in this irrational behavior ??? . I do have other parts which I or anyone else will never ever need but I keep them also . Cheer me up and tell me that you too are doing the same thing ,what do you have ???

John in cool cloudy morning Suffolk County England .

John,
You probably have the same illness that most of us have. Is there a market for your extras? Shipping costs for those heavy metal pieces would be expensive but would be absorbed by the buyer. Are there many model A's in cool cloudy England?

I have some things im keeping for those what ifs but alot of it is finding homes. Gonna be many many miles to wear out an AA axle shaft so id let them go to a good home.

i have 2 spare transmissions, 4 generators, 3 starters, and will i ever need more than one spare of each? probably not. Im a sucker for a good deal is my problem.

To me at least, NOS parts are like little time machines. They show what the part is supposed to be made like (quality, specs, etc.). Not the cheap repos most are nowadays. Granted I understand economics of scale etc.

My experiences with poor quality repop parts turned me into a seeker of NOS parts. At some point, the seeker becomes more like a hoarder. My vice is NOS A and B ignition parts, transmission parts, and various other bits. I have finally come to grips with this malady, although it may have more to do with a lack of storage space than anything else.

Bill, it's not "hoarding", it's "saving" for future generations. Or for the "Picker" guys to show your stuff on TV! Really, if it weren't for the "savers", where would Cracker Barrel get all that old junk they hang in their restaurants?!

When I inherited my Dad's phaeton he had accumulated several NOS parts which I hate to get rid of. I like the looks of them hanging around in the garage. I may let them go to a good home---eventually...Like Binger says, to help out a fellow hobbyist.

The nos parts that I tend to find are brake and steering parts. BUT then the gas tank and pr.of frame rails were a freak thing. Tank is long gone now. NICE to look at the stuff.

Also guilty - change out O2 sensors on moderns as with time they get sluggish and poor sensing generally causing rich mixture (aka gas milleage drop) - still work so hard for me to chuck em. Same with Ok but high mileage rotors, caps, any sensor i replace trying to solve a problem, etc.

Need to start thinking in terms of everything that takes up physical space that space has value. if the valuable space is worth more than the parts time to go.

We all love NOS pieces. I like to collect rubber parts such as hoses, door check straps, and grommets. I also collect hub caps and valve stems. I am happy to get these parts into the hands of fine point restorers.

Being as the topic here is Ford I don't see how anyone with an ounce of sense would relate that to computers.
With that being said I was at the Turlock swap meet and a guy had NOS Genuine Model A .020, .030, and .040. rings in nice original boxes with FORD graphics. It is highly unlikely I will ever find a small bore block. Fact is the boxes were just too pretty to walk away from and they are now in my garage.

I have three spare Powerhouse generators, two double venturi carbs and two spare starters all ready to mount if needed. Same extra parts for my V8 pickup along with a complete spare set of rims for each vehicle. That's all that remains from my larger 10x20 storage unit hoard of gas tanks, more rims and other various NOS sheet metal. Wish I had kept some of it.

The problem is now in 2018 these parts we found and saved 20-40-60 years ago are no longer readily available and not too many folks are open to swap parts out. With ebay and the internet there are more people trying to make it rich quick.

I'm working on hollowing out my mattresses to save my next collection.

My problem is not keeping NOS parts but "parts with an issue".
Every time I change a defective/broken part on a car by new parts I keep those old parts.

Years ago I use to collect NOS old Harley-Davidson pieces and parts. More into "A's" and other old cars (Chevrolet) now. So the Harley parts have been boxed up and stored away. Now the old car goodies collect the dust in the display cases. I really like collecting original "A" accessories available when
the cars were new. Some of them include original stone guards, auxiliary lights, gauges, parts/accessory catalogs, etc. Unfortunately, I don't have to many NOS "A" mechanical parts. Thank God for the parts vendors and their
repop stuff.

John,
You're not alone. Holding on to parts that we will never use is a common malady. As for me, I'm always afraid that, if I sell one of those parts, I will have a need for it shortly thereafter. Therefore, I hold on to the part(s).
By the way, I'm here in sunny Suffolk County, Long Island, New York.
All the best,
Rog

I have a set of 4 multi disk clutch disks. I guess I just like to look at them since I sold my early 28 a couple years ago. Also, have a set of side lights (not cowl lights) that fit the 28 closed car. Screw onto the door post. Only thing else is valve guides and points. Seem to have collected these things over the years. Fun to look at and show to people.

John, I still have parts and tools that came with my first model A back in 1957. I love it when I come across one of them. For a moment, I’m transported back to that time when I was first learning about cars and life. I hold that part or tool in my hand and compare the way it looks to the way I do now. Usually, the part or tool comes out ahead.

You are not alone,

Hey, am I wrong or has no one mentioned manuals? I have manuals going back a long ways, and each of them came with or was bought for a car or motorcyle I owned. I have shelves and shelves of the things, Am I ever going to use them again, probably not, but there is no way that I’m going to get rid of any of them.

Those things are me.

Yep. Re post 16. You should see what some of the computer geeks would do with a NOS trash-80! Or Amiga, or some of the real early stuff. Almost like they found a NOS A block with a 3 digit serial number. LOL

A lot of times, when I fix something, I'll keep the old parts around until the new fix has proven itself. Too many times the new parts aren't quite right. I don't usually go back to the old parts, but use them to compare and assess what went wrong. After a month or so of good running I pitch the bad parts.

On a similar note, if my mother has food in the fridge that is a little bad, she won't throw it out or eat it. She puts it in the fridge until it is good and rotten, then throws it out with no guilt that she's tossing good food. Growing up during WW2 in France will do that to you. I think I picked up some of that mindset.

In Chris Haynes post #22 those new old stock piston rings are not Model A rings. The part number prefix 81A refers to 1938 as first year of usage, and the part numbers 01A and 01T refer to 1940 first year of use.
