Default Got my first Model A

Yesterday, July, 17, I bought my first Model A Ford.

After hunting online for several months I found a car offered by a car man deep in the Georgia pine woods. His remote and mysterious compound hosts a number of perfecto street rods, some restored Cushman scooters and other moto-goodies.

Here is the listing that caught my eye (and captured my heart).

1930 Model A Ford. Approx. 15,000 miles on rebuilt motor, matching numbers, hydraulic brakes, and overdrive added; alternator, 6 volt; Title.
NEW PARTS INSTALLED: Napa battery; rear float motor mounts; dash panel and light; hydraulic shocks; new top; 2 mirrors; radiator stone guard grill; s/s hubcaps; hood lift kit; seal beam headlights; gas cap
NEW PARTS INCLUDED, NOT INSTALLED: High compression head, and gasket; steering wheel; oil filter kit; misc. parts; 2 Model A books by Les Matthews; and other manuals.

The actual car has not arrived yet -- had to send it out to be cleaned and pressed (minor body work). It should arrive in two or three weeks.

I have decided to name my car A-1.
This is, admittedly, not very imaginative, but I hope it will inspire me eventually to persue A-2 ... A-n.

Can't wait to see some pic's posted. I hope you got a few of A-1 as he was found. Nothing like that feeling getting your first Model A.

It snows in Georgia? Must be Northern Georgia. Lets see some 'A' car pictures...er Les Andrews shop manual?

Reminds me in bumper to bumper traffic on a sweltering day in Atlanta, GA. we motored along side an electric powered car. Honda I think. Every time the traffic stopped the electric windows motored down to let in the hot air. So I asked the driver why? He said the A/C won't cool enough when the car's not moving and too much battery power is being used.

Makes sense to me. Our house Central Air uses about 1 hp while the car's A/C uses about 20 hp [give or take] to combat the mechanicals and greenhouse effects.

I can't wait to drive a Chevy Volt!

Thumbs up Re: Got my first Model A

Congratulations!

Be sure to post some pictures of your "New" Model A when you get it home.

Suggestions:

Find a local Model A Club if you have not already done so.

If your car does not come with one, be sure to buy an owners manual. Interesting reading and good information.

Feel free to ask questions here on "The Barn", there is a world of information that is waiting to be shared.

Welcome to the Hobby.

Chris

Suggestion:

Stay on the Subject!

May be others do BUT personally, I have NO INTEREST in the attributes, (or lack there of) of an Electric Powered Honda in the summer time in Atlanta, Ga. or how much horsepower it takes to run a home A/C system.

May be I am missing something BUT I am trying to understand how that stuff fits with the original post?????

The car's A/C doesn't take more than a horsepower or two and makes very little differance in fuel mileage. I always use my A/C rather than drive with the windows down. On the freeway the added air drag with windows down is probably going to hurt the gas mileage more than running the A/C. What really kills fuel mileage is all the red lights. Besides, keeping the driver comfortable helps reduce road rage! LOL

Chris,
I did not understand it at first either. Then I went back to the original post and clicked on the "my home" link. Then I understood.

Peter,
Congratulations on the Model A Purchase!

I understand the "Snow in Georgia" part, but I do not know where the Honda Electric Vehicle and the House A/C stuff comes in.

I guess I am just getting Old, or Thick or Both?

Ain't this a grand website! It's like Forrest Gump's box of chocolates. Congratulations on your Model A #1 purchase and welcome to the hobby. You'll find an awful lot of fine folks here, all willing to help. Bought my first Model A in 1962 with my Dayton Daily News paper route money. My dad had to drive it home as I wasn't old enough. The point is, it's a great car and a great hobby and that you can become as involved as you want to. Have fun with it - go get ice cream in it - learn about it.

From the OP (original poster).

Thanks for the messages of welcome and encouragement. I have also received private emails and one most-helpful phone call.

Once my car arrives I will post some pix.

Hey Peter,

Congratulations. I just picked up a 29 Phaeton, and it too hasn't arrived yet....waiting on shipping. I know how you feel. It doesn't matter if it is the 1st, or the 20th (third for me) it is quite wonderful getting a 'new' car! Enjoy!

You have to understand some folks can be very helpful on this site..some not. You will learn who to click on for information.....some folks chat just to chat and dont offer much...some offer a lot.....

Join the MAFCA and /or MARC and get the bi monthly magazines and also buy some of the mechanics manuals....Les Andrews are the most comprehensive.

And dont be afraid to ask questions...most things have been covered here at one time or another...oil type, coolant type, tire types, what accessories are helpful, what are safe things to do. what are unsafe....

Good luck..
