Default Engine number question

The engine number stamping looks very original. After the "star" are the letters RF and then the number. Does anyone have an explanation for this?

I think that is a rebuilder's number. I saw one on a sport coupe by Marietta, MN a few years ago. I know it is for sale, maybe that is the one you are asking about?
