Overdrive Transmission

I have often wondered why someone never came up with a direct bolt-in synchromesh overdrive transmission for the Model A. With as many different small vehicles I would think some 4 or 5 speed could be modified to directly bolt in place. Is it because everything is too long?

Mitchell synchronizes and alters the lower gear ratios in an A transmission and offers a torque tube overdrive..bolt right in.


Everyone has an opinion about when a model a quits being a model a..my personal opinion is when the spur gear transmission is changed.

How about a spur gear transmission (stock) with a Mitchell O/D. Am I still considered a Model A?

Yes. Even Hot Rods are defined as being A's. B's, etc.

Double stock power with spur gears and a mitchell OD..she spins torque up to 2800,shifting the A trans is different than low rpm shifting a stock engine setup.

There have been several transmissions that have been adapted as a direct bolt on that do juts what you are asking. In fact, I have one in my MODEL A PICKUP.

I am just thinking out loud. I know what all transmission swaps are out there.

When I said bolt-in I meant no changes of the torque tube or anything.

Mitchell OD is probably the easiest solution out there, just more than I want to spend.

I think if someone were very determined they could design (or modify) a synchromesh overdrive gear train that would fit into a AA 4 speed transmission case. Which, with the AA bell housing and special rear bearing retainer, would drop right into a Model A passenger car.


Of course, adapting the RTS or even T5 is a far easier feat than designing and then manufacturing a complete gear train.
