Default Rim Runout

Does anyone know how much runout your rims have? Mine seem to have about 100/1000 sideways and 70/1000 up and down. Does anyone know how much new rims have. My modern car has about 10/1000. I have a few slightly bent spokes. Just wondering if I could make any improvement on the rims.
Thanks,Bill

I think that 0.125" is considered acceptable.

Actually, 0.125" ( ⅛" ) is the maximum amount that Ford allowed. IMHO you need to be shooting for under .100" as a minimum standard. Below is a portion of the original print that I have posted several times here before showing the max. amount Ford accepted.

Thanks for the reply, but I'm not sure what 1/8 indicator reading means.

1/8" is 0.125 of an inch. That's not bad for someone from a metric country, Heh!

As the term "inch" is not indicated on the print, it could mean anything. Ron W

What I find interesting is the line on the drawing that says, "this area must be smooth before lining is glued in. Glued in?"

That would be the original cardboard rim liner. I have a 21" wheel that still has the original liner in it and pretty nice paint on the inside of the rim.

How is runout measured ? Must be a very special tool to measure to the 1/1000 of an inch ?

I was surprised with modern manufacturing that the new rims for sale today state that they could have 1/8 in run out. I sure would have thought with the new one's that they could do better than 80 years ago?

Yeh, 1/8th does sound excessive, I was told 1 mm runout, but I thought that was excessive too and it is 1/3 of 1/8th.

Must be what is accepted , although when I see modern wheels spun on a balancer they look almost exactly true to me.
