Default Best way to clean vintage aluminum finned heads

I recently picked up a set of original Eddie Meyer 21 stud heads . They were on a running vehicle for a few years . I was curious what would be the best to remove some of the black buildup on the top side of the heads and get them as clean as possible . I used some simple green and a toothbrush and it definitely was a good start but didn’t get it all.ideas ??

I prefer glass beading. Then, coat with Eastwood brand hi-temp clear. They will look as new.

put a set of much used, abused heads on a 40 coupe-the owner had me blast them and then he coated with a por 15 high temp paint and we cooked them in my powder coat oven for 20 minutes at 400 looked really good and they are now protected from dirt and fuel overflow

I usually use a product the aircraft guys use, Alumiprep 33. It is 33% phosphoric acid, wear gloves, follow directions and it will look new. I buy mine from Wick's aircraft in Highland, Il.

I get a good industrial brake clean, highly flammable, but it cleans oil and grease off aluminum intake and heads good. Comes in a yellow can, just don’t use on a painted engine, it will harm paint!

Thanks! I got lucky and actually bought them from a member on here , he had them for years on his 36 Ford . He had planned on taking them to LARS if they hadn’t sold beforehand . I didn’t get to make it out to the show this year . Definitely gonna try and finish my roadster completely before next years show.
