When did they switch from the square starter switch to the later style? Also didnt the early rods have a S bend in em and held by cotter pin or something?

I know the later style used a flat contact on the starter while the earlier style used a tapered wedge shape contact

Not sure what you are asking about a "starter button" ???? If you are asking about the contact on the top of the starter that is not removed easy. However, you should be able to remove the starter switch and clean the contact in place with no problem.

From the beginning of production to Oct 28 the square switch was used with 2 variations which were associated with the rod. The 1st used through March of 28 had the offset rod. Beginning in April 28 the 2nd version was used this had a straight rod.

thanks for replies-- by starter button, i mean the round copper ,flat at top, 5/8" in diam , embedded in anterior of starter body which is probably connected to interior field coil. i always worry about trying to remove parts if i don't know how they are attached.
the button is badly pitted.

If the "button" is round and flat and your stater switch does not look like the one pictured above, you do not have a the correct starter for a Aug 28 "A". Most likely at some time in the past it was changed out for the later design starter. With the contact being heavily pitted I would use a fine file and remove a very small amount of the surface to smooth it out.
