36 Front Spring Removal
I dropped my whole front end as a unit and now want to disassemble it. Is the spring under pressure?

Re: 36 Front Spring Removal
Yes! Need a spring spreader on these years to be safe. They have a lot more stored energy than you would think.

Re: 36 Front Spring Removal
Possible idea. This is a 40. Installed clamps after assembly removed from car as a safety precaution.

Re: 36 Front Spring Removal
You have options...
Since it's removed and if you aren't reusing the shackles you can sawsall them. It will make a little buck. Or remove the spring centerbolt with clamps if your reusing shackles. I prefer to use a spreader in the vehicle as the spring is bolted to something, but I'm not sure if it really matters never done it out of the vehicle with a spreader. as feared as it is (rightly so) it's not that bad. Just be careful. |

Re: 36 Front Spring Removal
A long All Thread to replace the center bolt sounds like a good idea. Any suggestions on how to make a Spring Spreader?

Re: 36 Front Spring Removal
If no one else answers, I can take a picture of the one I made out of a piece of pipe, some 1" all-thread and some scrap angle iron. Let me know.

Not sure which way your going here but if your removing the center bolt a spring spreader aint your huckleberry. you need to clamp it as mentioned with c-clamps. Many threads on one-off spring spreaders. Search here. From pullmaxs to other. I prefer a standard spreader. They are not that rare and really make it easy once ya have one. But you can remove a spring in the vehicle with a couple bottle jacks and some weight too. |
