Stock Model A 1/4 mile time?
Hey does any one know or have any idea on what a stock model a would do for time on a 1/4 mile drag track. Im thinking of taking mine this summer and not being real hard on it but just shifting normaly and cutting it of at around 50 mph then finishing at 50 mph. has anyone ever done this before is there any videos out there? I know my friend did it with a 26 T and he did around 35 seconds.....
I just think it would be alot of fun to see the look on everyones faces when i pull up to starting line..... |

In 1966 I took my 29 coupe to the strip and ran it. Time was 26 seconds and the speed was to slow to record.

I seem to recall an old Mechanix Illustrated article done by Tom McCahill where he did one of his road tests on a Model A. That was in the sixties and it may have had time trials in it.

Either way, a stock Model A needs a tad more than a quarter mile to reach 50 mph. |

Re: Stock Model A 1/4 mile time?
Back in the mid 60's, we were racing a '56 Chevy. A Model A showed up every week and got a trophy becasue there was no one in his class. I took my stock '30 coupe on Sunday, ran a 23.5 sec 47.8 MPH and came home with a trophy. My record is perfect with it, raced once, won once & never again. Just wanted to make him earn it or take it away once. He never came back again, guess I spoiled it for him. (Still have the trophy in my shop)

Re: Stock Model A 1/4 mile time?
I saw a bracket race once that was the most exciting I have ever seen. A model A pickup was running 27 seconds. He was paired up with a 12 second car. Wow, a 15 second head start by the A. Did he ever look small when the 12 sec car left the line. The A actually lost by a few inches. The A had to go home. What a race! Don't often see that.

Put it down. The top is like a parachute behind you.

You will need an approved seat belt.

Re: Stock Model A 1/4 mile time?
I used to see a few run in the early 60's but don't remember the times. As I recall VW's ran in the same class. Flathead V8 dragsters took long enough to make a run you actually got to see them. Today it's a puff of smoke and it's over.

If memory serves (and it does less and less) McCahill did his Model A test while I was in the Army in Germany--1955-56.

Actually I had the worn engine in there at the time. I think I was in the low 25s at about 48mph. I did beat Dale's Tudor by a couple car lengths. It sure was fun!

Re: Stock Model A 1/4 mile time?
In Oregon all of the car clubs got together one day and rented the Woodburn drag strip (don't know if they still do). Well, just for fun I entered my 30 T.S. and got paired with a late 20's T Pheaton-he won. If I remember correctly I did something like 15 sec. @20ish MPH on an 1/8th mile run. If was fun and the announcer got a laugh too.
Mike p.s. I lost the engine a couple of months later-coincidence?
