Have not personally done it on a gas tank. Perhaps others have.

Also Thermocure, Rust911. There are probably others. These 3 are safe for metals/seals. Pretty much dissolves the rust into the liquid, no flakes. Would mix with distilled water like doing a cooling system as full as possible and let it sit for a week, then thoroughly drain and flush till drains clean.

Best done with fuel shutoff off the tank, in case something gets dislodged, could wreck the fuel shutoff.

If me, would immediately add/fill with Gas with Marvel Mystery Oil or 2 cycle oil to keep tank from flashover rusting.

I had a problem with fuel blockages on the road which I cured with the fuel filter fitted to the tank side of the fuel shut off tap and left the rust in the tank.

Something else you might add is a magnet under the tank. Get one off of a speaker.

The magnet trick sounds interesting.........can I attach one to a wire and drop it in the tank of gas and move it around to attract rust and then draw it out with the iron oxide on it, then repeat that process??

That would take care of the center section but not behind the baffles, about 1/3 of the tank.

This shows how we got out the big chunks of rust. This made his car drivable. He later took the tank out and had it cleaned and coated.

Decided to research, found Evaporust in a thread from 2010.

I would dilute, not use straight, would be expensive otherwise. Thermocure is basically evaporust, slight difference for use in radiators/cooling system. Not sure, may be cheaper

RUST 911 works great. If you keep oil on metal it won't rust. Gasoline is oil so always keep your tank full. Modern fuel has ethanol in it. Ethanol absorbs moisture from the air. This puts water in your tank which is harmful to the metal.

Rust 911 worked for me. Also built a dead leg and added magnets on outside of tank, near the shut off valve. Added a 1 inch piece of copper tubing above the valve. This prevents most particles from entering the fuel line. I use non-ethanol gas only. This has worked for almost a year.

I saw a review that it contains citric acid - true? If yes flush with baking soda/water?

It leaves a black coatong, any issues with this getting into the filters/carb?

The early stages of rust is FLAKES that will stick to a MAGNET. The next stage is like "RUST-DUST", that will even find its' way into the carb, but is not bad about plugging up the jets & passages. Just open the carb & give it a BLOW JOB!

Been there after trying many quick fixes over 3 months, ended up taking out the tank and having it cleaned and lined. End of frustration and now the car runs great.
