Default 65 Shelby Mustang Hood Prop Instalation

Installing an original Shelby factory hood on my 65 Mustang. Got a repo of the hood rod prop. Been trying to figure out how to mount it to the car. Need details as to how it mounts to the car. Googled it several times and haven't found anything that shows how it mounts to the radiator support,

66 Shelby's used the springs, one light one and one stock one. That's what is still on my car. Yes Tony Branda would have all the stuff you need.

I have all the parts. Need to know where the hood prop rod mounts on the radiator support. I've seen the location stated as on the drivers side and the passangers side. Just takes one hole. Just need to know where. Photo and or measurements.

Never having been a 65 Shelby up here, I don't know where it goes, but I did look around the net...

Only pic I could find, most 65's I see pics of, have the hood springs. One big one small. Shelby wasn't making show cars, they were very crud with little consistency with what I have seen over the years.

Thumbs up Re: 65 Shelby Mustang Hood Prop Instalation

I have the original SHELBY PARTS INSERT to the MPC 1965-72. Let me see if I can find it and will get back.

I understand the desire of a prop rod over hood springs.

I'll enter the pit in the morning. I had a 67 GT500 and know how you feel. A lot of assembly variations.

OK ...

Found the inserts - FORD HP - SHELBY - HOLMAN-MOODY

No reference to the prop rod or hardware. The BASIC PN (16826) was not listed in the 1956-72 FORD MPC either. It must have been a very limited option (or deleted).

One vendor lists a "kit" which consists of a flat washer and cotter key. Can you provide a photo of the swivel end?

There has to be correct info out there as they have been documented extensively. How can you sell a hood rod with no ill or attaching parts?

Below are photos of an install -

Thats the best picture I've found so for but would be nice to get measurements from top of radiator support down to the centerline of the hole and from the inside edge of the fender to the centerline of the hole. I have the rod, washer, and cotter key. In thinking about this a little further, since these cars were actually hand built there's a good chance that there were no schematics on these and the exact location. Since I'm doing a restomod coupe and not a restoration its not critical. Just need it to look right and keep the hod open. Thanks for the photo's. They are helpful.

Here is another car that has the pivot on the RS-

Did you read the URL? It describes the hold down method.

Slumlord, That's what I was saying, cars are crudely hand built. I'm not sure but I think the R models had hood prop rods, street cars had springs. In Kultuz's pictures the white car is a 65, and not a R model, but that is not a Shelby vin number, The red car is a 66, I know for sure they did not have a prop rod. I think the best is to just eye ball it, and drill a hole. You will be good!

What is it that some cannot understand the term RESTORATION and/or RESTO-MOD?

Just hang it anywhere and throw some GM brakes on it and you are good to go. Oh, and don't forget the HEI DIST and SEARS battery.

I give up.

Did they early Falcons have prop rods? Also wondering if there is a hold down for the loose end when stored?

I really like your posting there K-lutz. Oh, and don't forget some cobbled up terminals on the generic battery. New cables? Too expensive!

This photo shows the prop installed to the right of the hood pin. The previous photos show it to the left of the hood pin. I'm thinking that since these were prety much hand built bot could be as built by Shelby.

According to flatrod the white car is a 65 ad only 65 received them, whether/depending street or race.

With all the SHELBY enthusiasts/information, there has to be a definitive description. Even a hand built/assembled would use a template I would think. It is called quality control.

Let me look around little further. Did your hood manufacturer say not to use springs?

And the BAT held in the rusted out tray with a bungee cord or baling wire.

One of the things that really bother me (other than the voices in my head) is a person asking a direct question and then get the one-fits-all or do it this way and it will be fine.

The OP is creating a RESTO-MOD and wants it to look correct.
