1939 Ford Coupe Seat Question
I am busy modifying a 1939 Ford Coupe. The wife wants a new seat with a headrest, something in the middle to rest her arm on and an adjustable back. I found a set of bucket seats, in good shape, at the local salvage yard from a 1996 Mercury Villager and am having a problem fitting them far enough forward to be useful - they need to go further into the middle but are currently bumping into the drive shaft hump and also need to be dropped about 1-2 inches. The decision to make is have a certified welder/fabricator modify the framework for the bucket seats OR go back the salvage yard and purchase a set of different bucket seats that will fit or a bench seat that will satisfy her criteria.
What seat will fit with very little modification? I would like to just drill new mounting holes if possible. Or can I add a headrest to the current stock seat, if so, how? |

Re: 1939 Ford Coupe Seat Question
I'd check some of the Street Rod magazines, they usually have ads in them for after-market/custom seats, you should be able to fine a bench seat with a fold down arm rest in the center (that coupe is kind of tight though, you might consider a portable/removable center are rest/drink holder, etc.) as well as a headrest option.

Re: 1939 Ford Coupe Seat Question
I'd get a new wife and keep the car original. Or, at least, leave her at home. Don't mean to sound mean, but if the stock seat isn't bothering you.....

Re: 1939 Ford Coupe Seat Question
83 Malibu split bench power seat has headrests, fold down arm rest, and is @51" wide.
You would have to modify the base. Very comfortable seat for long trips . Bruce Works good Lasts long time |

Re: 1939 Ford Coupe Seat Question
Fatfndr, I guess that a lot of seats can be modified to fit.
You have about 52" at the rear & about 45" at the front, + or -, to work with. Most bucket seat are somewhere around 20-22". Even more with arm rests. Stock seat is about 50" rear & 44" front. Very plush when rebuilt with good padding. Keep both, car & wife.

Re: 1939 Ford Coupe Seat Question
I bought a Glide seat for my 40 without armrests, but they make them with armrests.I'm thinking about sending the backs to them to have armrests installed.
