31 Standard Roadster Windshield Frame
Just recently a picture of a closed car windshield frame was posted that showed the proper locations for all of the holes. Does anyone have anything similar for the 31 std. roadster. I am repairing a frame that has had some extra holes drilled and want to make sure I have it right. The car was equipped with a vacuum wiper motor.

The wiper motor does not bolt to the frame on that car.It has two pinch clamps that hold it in place.Even the vacuum line to it has a couple of friction clamps to hold it in place. The only holes that should be in that frame are the ones for the snaps to hold the top fabric in place.

Yes. Plus two holes in the bottom frame for finger pulls. |

Mike,
What distance from the edges are the holes for the pulls? I bought a frame that didn’t have the holes drilled. David Serrano |

OK. I think someone drilled a hole to put a mismatched motor on with the shaft going through the frame so I'll get rid of that. The finger pull holes are ok. Are the holes for the top snaps evenly spaced or are there a couple of odd ones near the wiper motor.

David Serrano California Travieso is offline Report Post Dave: Finger pulls are 11 inches from the outside edges to the center of the hole. . Countersunk on the outside. I measured both a standard and deluxe window frame, and they are the same. |

So, from the left side facing the car from the front, the distances are respectively, 1 1/4", 10 1'4", 10 1/2", 10 1'2", 10 1/4", and 1 14" to the opposite side. Yes, and any extra holes were for the wrong wiper motor, so can be filled. mike |

Re: 31 Standard Roadster Windshield Frame
Thanks Mike. According to Bratton's catalog, there are 6 snaps.

Fundy. If your look close, you can just barely make out the five snaps on this car. Like yours, someone has drilled an extra hole for the wrong wiper motor! Five snaps is plenty to hold the front flap in place. Maybe some cars did have six snaps, but this one here did not.

Hi Mike, Take another look at your frame. You should find an empty hole at the wiper location where your sixth snap has been lost. Also, if your car is late enough to have had a vacuum wiper, there will be two small holes on the top drivers side for the wiper tube clips. Marco Fundy: Marco Tahtras sent me the above PM. Wait, Wait! Don't fill those holes in yet. Marco says there ARE 6 snaps on 31 roadster window frame, as does Brattons. The photo shows the open hole on my windshield about 1 1/2" from a snap. Drilled straight through. It doesn't make sense to have two snaps that close, but who am I to say? Marco is a roadster authority, so I won't take issue with him. And for what it's worth, the windshield frame on our 28 Phaeton Does have six snaps, but that's a different car. |

Re: 31 Standard Roadster Windshield Frame
OK, so here's me eating crow. This standard roadster DOES have six snaps. One on either side of the wiper, which is drilled through the windshield frame. This car was "restored" in 1957, and I use the term restored loosely in this case. Right or wrong, I have no idea. Hopefully Marco will see this and chime in?

Re: 31 Standard Roadster Windshield Frame
OK guys, the plot thickens! The 2 snaps close to each other do make sense as that's the way it is on my 27 T to allow for a snap on the flap on each side of the wiper. The frame on my A roadster had some previous work done on it so the extra hole could have been filled then. I will look to see if I can find any sign of the holes for the vacuum line clips. Also, I may have to drill a new hole for the wiper shaft as right now I have 5 snap holes only plus the 2 at the bottom for the finger pulls.

Re: 31 Standard Roadster Windshield Frame
You don't need a hole for the wiper shaft. The shaft goes over the top,not through the frame.I am not aware of any holes for the hose clips on the frame for the open car, mine has two spring clips that have little U shaped divots in them that the hose rides in.No holes for hose clamps on mine.

Page 20-14 of the Standards has pictures of the clamps for the wiper motor and the vacuum hose.

Re: 31 Standard Roadster Windshield Frame
Thanks Bob. I have the Judging Standards but somehow I missed the info and pictures about the clips. I need to read the book a few more times. Every time I use it I find something I never knew before.

Re: 31 Standard Roadster Windshield Frame
Thanks to this forum and some input from Walt at Bratton's most of my concerns and questions have been answered. The only outstanding question now is the proper location for the 2 snaps on each side o f the wiper motor. I hole is there but the other has been filled and I would like the measurement from the edge of the frame and/or the distance between these 2 snaps.
