18-32...May have been coke/ charcol as mentioned in a previous post. Remember the old gasworks that produced domestic gas out of coke? That stuff was lethal compared to modern natural gases and LPG. (popular with suicidal types who liked to stick their heads inside gas ovens though !)

If I am correct the city of Boston produced and supplied man made gas.They called it coal gas. This was used in homes for cooking and water heating.They had manually lit gas stack heaters and the water was stored in a tall narrow copper tank...probably held about 40 gallons.You had to be darned carefull you didn't leave them unattended. It also supplied gas to the mantle type street lights up until the late '40's or early '50s When they went to natural gas the gas co. had to come and adjust all the gas fired appliances.This little story must date me a bit.
