Water pumps, playing around
Are all water pump castings the same length? When assembled, with the packing nut loose to eliminate friction, why can I move the shaft fore and aft with a quarter to a half inch play, les Andrews says no more than .010. That being the case where does all the wear occur to allow that much movement.

The boss in the cylinder head is the rear thrust in the original stock system

So does that mean that any play in the assembly prior to installation is taken up by the boss in the cylinder head, after installation. Hence the need to build up the end of the shaft by brazing? Just curious because on one of my pumps several washers had been installed on the shaft for why I don’t know.

Re: Water pumps, playing around
The suppliers sell an inexpensive collar you can buy that is a fix that does not require brazing or a new pump.
I bought a new leakless pump that did not need collars or brazing. https://modelastore.com/index.php?ro...&category_id=0 https://www.brattons.com/water-pump-shaft-collar.html Last edited by Magicbox51; 08-19-2018 at 10:26 AM. |

If you have a lathe you can make a Delrin hard plastic button to fit in a counterbore in the shaft. Takes out all the end play and works really well. Does have to be fitted to the head though as the vertical webs wear will be unique to the heads wear.

Re: Water pumps, playing around
I purchase the long pump shaft and fit it accordingly.
