Door lock set screw
Does anyone have a good method for removing the door lock set screw on a 39 Woody? I've managed to snap off one side of the slot in the screw head & they are hard. It won't budge.

As the screw is long (1"?) and within a very thin sheet metal sleeve, well, you're a much better tool maker than me if you can get it out of there. In the past, I have disassembled the door and removed the sleeve. Then, made a new sleeve and reinstalled. NOT a fun task at all. Sorry for the bad but accurate news...

Re: Door lock set screw
Hey, there was a thread on this just 2-3 weeks ago. Search for it in the archives.

Re: Door lock set screw
I have done a search for this. The only thing I find is for a steel door not a wooden door.

Re: Door lock set screw
Poopy... I'd overlooked the application. My apology. I'd not had an issue like this with the only wagon I'd restored

Re: Door lock set screw
After several drill bits, I got one drill bit that was a little harder and I drilled it out deep enough that an easy out got the screw out.

Re: Door lock set screw
If it were me, I would find or make a hole saw larger then the metal tube in there and from the door edge, cut a new hole that is just big enough to take out the set screw and whatever it is in inside of in the wood. Then the lock will come out. You can then plug the hole with a maple dowel, drill it for a new threaded metal tube, or thread inserts for wood, (or drill and tap the hardwood itself for threads for a set screw) Since this is a part of the door that is not always visible nobody (maybe Kube or me) would probably ever notice it. It might even be covered with weather strip depending on the year.
Good luck! |

Re: Door lock set screw
same thing happened to me on my 39 tudor. i did manage to drill out the screw but was not easy since the half of screw head remaining made it difficult to center drill. had to tap the tube for next size larger screw to save it after drilling.

Re: Door lock set screw
I did the same thing on my '37 (unmolested) 1/2 ton. Talked to my machinist buddy, he said to use a carbide drill bit or a carbide burr, i don't remember, it worked perfectly.

Re: Door lock set screw
I don't know if your '39 has the same set up as my '46 but if it is then it's a real tough situation. On my '46 the setscrew goes into a 1/4" hole and screws into what I would describe as a "barrel nut" with a flange on it. It will be extremely hard to get anything into that small 1/4" hole. You might be able to remove the wood screws that anchor the door handle and wiggle the handle back and forth to see if that will do anything. All you are trying to do is to get that setscrew to allow the handle to come out. Once the handle is out you can replace the barrel nut and setscrew. I used a "stainless steel narrow base nut" available from McMaster-Carr and a stainless setscrew.

Re: Door lock set screw
I did manage to get the barrel out. I drilled around it, squared the hole out & made a plug. I then drilled the plug & pressed the barrel into it & glued it in place. I think it will work. Thanks for the idea woodiewagon46.
