What's the best product for lubricating the windshield gasket upon installation? I've used liquid soap in the past. Just wondering if that is the preferred method. Getting ready to put the windshield in my Zephyr.

When I worked in a bodyshop back in the 70's we used GOJO hand cleaner. Was more slippery than soap. Downside was cleaning the residue especially if the car was about to be painted. As it is petroleum based fisheyes would always occur after its use. Don't ask me how I know...Bill

Will it affect the rubber being a petroleum base ? My car is painted so that won't be a problem.

I have done a few windshields with GO-JO, with no negative problems. Pete

High quality dish washing soap. If your car isn't painted do not use silicone anything.

I would never use a silicone spray anywhere around or close to my car, I won't even have it in my shop. You can spray it outside and if the wind is right it will get on things a block away then it will be fish eye city for sure.

THIS is EXCELLENT advice........! Silicone is evil, sneaky stuff. True, it'll float in the air from blocks away, and especially from the shop next door where the morons spray it on everything. I've been through that fish-eye shocker once, caused by the shop next door. It only takes a whiff. Not only is it expensive to scrape all that now-ruined, "fish-eyed" paint back off of your car, but extremely labor-intensive to prepare for the next shot. Throw that stuff away! DD

Ken, I use window cleaner- Windex actually. I'd learned that trick from a friend that owns a glass shop. It lubricates very well, won't harm paint and won't bubble up seemingly forever in the future when it gets wet.
I'd be very careful if you choose any type of soaps as they can attack paint - especially fairly fresh paint.
NEVER use a silicone based product. NEVER!!!

Coopman, your story reminds me all too well of the 1970's when vinyl tops were all the rage. Recall that crap "Armor-all". Guys used to cover the tops with that s---. Problem was, as you said, it got all over everything. Just try to paint a car that has had tiny little droplets (airborne) on it. Fisheyes? Countless...

These days I see guys spray on that foaming tire dressing. Apparently they are not worried about ever having to touch up their paint in the future. That stuff should come with a warning label "Do not use within 100' of painted surfaces"!

Don't know for sure but I was told that dryer sheets contain silicone. Might be true, when I cleaned the drum filter every thing was slippery.
