Oil pump drive
The teardown of the newly rebuilt engine (30 years ago) continues. Take a look at the oil pump drive. Can anyone tell me the clearance reccomended in the photo below, and if the top piece should have groves on the underside for slinging oil? Clearly things do not look good for 10 miles running time. Looks like the gear is evidencing metal fatigue.

Re: Oil pump drive
I can't answer your questions, but I can say if I pulled out a unit that looked like that I'd just replace it. New ones are cheap, well made, and readily available. Go see Tom at The Ford Works.

Re: Oil pump drive
It looks like they just put the old worn-out gear back in during the rebuild. That thing is shot and should be replaced. The gap is determined by the relationship of the gear and the lower retainer piece to the cast body and is usually around 0.006-0.010 inches. The lower retainer piece has shallow criss-crossed grooves cut into the bearing surface and the gear has a spiral groove along its shaft.

Re: Oil pump drive
I've posted other photos of the engine - search for Rubatoguy as the poster. When received the engine had a knock and was taken to a local bay area shop - Mal's A sales, who discovered the oil pump broken off just past the entrance to the block. Also the center main had 6 thousands clearance, and there was a rag blocking the front bearing galley. It is a B block. Because of overheating, the engine was not run more than 10 miles, and then when my Dad got sick and later passed, it sat in a garage for 30 years before I got it.

Re: Oil pump drive
Is the Ford works still in business? If you search the web it says they are not in business and the google photo of the location has a big sign that says "For Lease." If they are not out of business, they should correct the bad information.

Re: Oil pump drive
sounds as if the "rebuild" might have consisted of rings and a valve lap, if that. "Rebuilt" is one of those words like "restored" that can have a different meaning to the seller than it does to the buyer. What do the main bearings look like? You might consider having it rebuilt for real.

Re: Oil pump drive
I grew up going to Mal's as a kid in the 70's. They just don't have places like that anymore. Thanks for sparking that memory
