Re: Gas shutoff valve
Thank you guys for the suggestions here. Just one more question. What's a pencil filter? Is it a filter in the shutoff valve or in the tank?

Debris in the tank has s tendency to damage the gas shutoff with the result being it leaks when the shutoff is off. The leak is not from the valve body in the interior, but causes the shutoff not to 100% turn off the gas supply to the carb. https://www.brattons.com/fuel-tank-filter-screen.html |

Re: Gas shutoff valve
I drained the tank into a gas can from the gas line by disconnecting from the carb. I have a pencil filter so of course there is some left when it is otherwise drained. then, inside the car, I took out the mat and the floorboards knowing there would be some dripping of gas. While taking the valve off, I was careful to have a shallow can underneath to catch the remaining gas. Wear a short sleeve shirt as there will be some draining down onto your hand as you go. It's inevitable. Just do it in a ventilated space with no sparks or open flames. Once the remaining gas is drained, you're good to go. There were only a couple cups of gas remaining, so its not that much, but there will be some that gets on your hands and even down your arm, so make sure to have the floor out and you should be OK.

I am curious where to get fine screen too. I am not worried about water, the sediment bowl and screen should filter that out before it gets to the carb. Filtering sediment./grit/rust from the shutoff is more my concern. My A did not have the pencil screen, and debris wrecked a couple of shutoffs before I found out/learned here about what was causing my issues. During this also had issues with bad out of box shutoffs from venders before learned here to order shutoffs from Brattons. |

Here's one source. They handle any size mesh you want. The screen I used was given to me and unfortunately I do't know the source. Graingers? The mesh size I used is not real fine, but fine enough to keep the big stuff from plugging the shutoff valve and gas line. Don't use steel screen, because it will rust. Brass conforms easily to any shape you want, and is easy to solder. |
