Can't answer that, but, over the decades many strange things can happen.

Whenever I clean and install a pan, after dumping a qt thru the distributor hole and 3 thru the filler neck, I mark the stick. Dump in another qt and remark.

The you can take measurements to know what/which stick is correct.

A friend's 30 has a dipstick that isn't right when putting in the proper amount of oil.

Are you inserting the 'dip stick' all the way where both halves of the rod are in the hole, -or just to the area where the two halves of the rod meet?

Please explain what you mean when you say "dropped oil pan" or "after dropping pan".
Did you actually drop the pan or did you just drain the oil out of it?

You need to squeeze the two halves together then it goes all the way in to the actual handle loop.

Insert all the way to the finger pull, if not inserted fully, a source of oil leakage

If your stick is the bottom one as in the picture then it sounds as though you are just not inserting it to the pull loop.

Page 5 of the Model A instruction book says:

When replacing the oil level indicator, see that both the short and long ends of the indicator enter the opening in the crankcase and push the indicator all the way down (see Fig. 1). Failure to insert both ends into the opening permits oil to leak out.

a quart usually is sitting in the splash pan and valve chamber - the 5 quart capacity is on a bone fresh engine thats never seen oil before.

Early engines had the elongated handle - dunno exactly when it was changed to round.

Thanks. The car is a '31 (American), the engine a '30 (Canadian) and the dipstick?????? maybe neither but that's OK as long as it reads correctly and it appears that it does.

Put in the recommended amount of oil, mark your dipstick accordingly...done. Doesn't matter if you have the right dipstick or not. File works good, if you're careful you can even add some crosshatch if you like.
