Coating Steering Wheel
The original steering wheel on my 28 phaeton needs better coating/protection to prevent moisture activated red hand syndrome.
In the past I have cleaned, dried, and coated the wheel with spar urethane, but every 2 - 3 years the coating is worn or flaked away and my hands turn red again. Do you think a automotive clear coat may be a more durable coating for me? The wheel is exposed to sunlight and moisture and gets lots of use. Thanks in advance Phred |

Re: Coating Steering Wheel
I believe the coating "lets go" because it never truly bonds to the wheel. Years of oils have soaked into that steering wheel surface. There is a wax and oil remover that is used to prep a car before spraying paint on it. I have used it to wipe grease and oil off an engine to clean it up. It's pretty potent stuff and I don't know if it would cause the steering wheel surface surface to deteriorate in your hands or not.
Rather than go through this every few years I would look at getting a new steering wheel. Chap |
