Here is a link to Tom Endy's informative article wherein the differences in the early and late transmissions are referenced.

Dennis,
There were several changes made in the cases through model A production - maybe five types all together. The case with the large reverse idler shaft hole was the first case used. The second and third style cases had machined front and rear bearing stops like the first case had. These two style differed in the use of bronze spacers for the cluster gear. The first of these two cases with the small reverse idler shaft holes used the bronze spacers in the front and rear of the cluster gear. The second style add a little more metal in the case to eliminate the bronze spacers. The next case used a snap ring instead of a machined front and rear bearing stops. The case in the bottom of your picture shows the later case with the snap ring slot machined in it. I think there might have been one other case, but it would have been a minor change to the last version. There is a document I saw somewhere that showed the 5 cases and the differences among them, but of course I can't remember where it was.

One case without threads machined for the input shaft cover for the throwout hub would be for the multiple disk clutch.

The early case has threads for the retainer but they don't go all the way threw the case .

My early case did not have any threads machined at the front except for the bell house.
