Default Backfiring Engines

Yesterday I posted about timing issues with my Model A and that it "backfired" a couple times when I was cranking it over. It occurred to me that with the advent of computer controlled ignition and fuel delivery, backfiring is a thing of the past and it's likely many folks today have never heard an engine backfire. Can you imagine what would happen if you went to a major airport to pick up a family member and your car happened to backfire...

In my flaming youth we used to do that by momentarily turning off the ignition while driving and turning it back on. Sometimes it was a little louder than expected.

Stopped doing that when I had to buy a new muffler for the family car out of my pocket money.

Yep, that was one of the risks.
