97 Carb Fuel Bowl

Can anyone tell me how the fuel bowl is vented on a 97. Mine seems to not want to accept fuel. It will take on fuel from a electric pump when the engine is not running and then when I start it up it will run just fine until it runs out of fuel. The moment the engine stops the fuel bowl will fill back up and it will start right up and burn the fuel till its gone. I can watch this happen through the clear fuel filter that I have inline. I also notice the fuel filter is never filled with fuel, it is half air all the time. The float is set as it should be. It just seems that there is pressure in the bowl that prevents the fuel flow into it when the float drops. I have tried the needle style and the grosse valve with the same results ? Any Ideas ??? Its driving me crazy!

Vent is the slot where you hook the accelerator pump return spring.
Start looking at filter and at possible air leak between pump and tank

Sounds like you don't have enough fuel coming to the carb. Do you have a fuel filter before the pump that could be stopped up or the gas line loaded with rust or hole in the line which will cause your fuel system to get air. The fittings may be loose. Good luck!

A few things off the top of my head.....
-The float may be sunk.
-Wrong gas cap (non-vented). Remove the cap and see if that helps.
-Remove the fuel line from the carb,shove a rubber hose on and put the other end in a quart jar.Turn on the electric pump to make sure you have a good flow.
Is the pump still working when the engine is running?
Beyond that, I'm stumped.If it's still driving you crazy,you could join my support group?(Just kidding) Good luck.

An addition...split the possible problem areas. Solder a short pipe to something like a thinner can, hook it to carb as gravity feed. Unplug the fuel pump so you are not immolated during the experiment!
if the thing fires up and keeps going, problem is aft of the carb. If behavior does not improve, time to yank the lid on the carb.

The Pump has good flow, pumped fuel into a bucket , It has about 3 lbs of pressure. I thought that was too much, I put a regulator on the line at 2 lbs , still acts the same way. My next step is to gravity flow it and see what happens I guess ???

I have the electric fuel pump wired on its own toggle switch, independent of the ignition

The carb is a brand new English Stromberg 97 all adjusted at the factory.

you checking the pressure with pressure gauge?....Mike

My neighbor brought over an extra regulator that had a gauge on it and connected to that only, plugged at the other outlet the gauge read 3.1 lbs. I put a cheap regulator on it and will check it again. Do you think the pump in sucking air from the fuel tank?

You mentioned that the carburetor is new.Maybe you could swap it out with your old one and see if there is a difference. Just a thought.Sometimes, new doesn't mean good.

3.1lbs is too much pressure, try 2lbs

as a test hook up a container with some fuel in it to the carb and hold it higher than the carb so it gets a gravity feed rather than pulling fuel through a pump from your tank.

EDIT: sorry just seen bruce suggested hooking a temporary fuel source up to discount where the fault may lie.

tbh sounds like something is blocking your fuel pipe when the pump is running, I would be surprised if its a carb issue.

I am going to do just as you guys have suggested and set up a gravity fuel source tonight and see what happens. The old original carb did the same thing as the new one that is why I though I would just buy new instead of rebuild? Could the electric fuel pump be drawing air and fuel from the tank at the same time therefore always having fuel with voids of air in the lines. The inline fuel filter which is standing upright in the line going to the carb is never full of fuel at best it is 1/3 full. Also as the engine stumbles and dies, right at that moment I can view a surge of fuel through the filter going to the carb but too late to keep it running ??

Sounds more like the pump is sucking something in the tank into the fuel line. When the pump dies the debris can float off as there is no suction hence the line is clear again until you start it again.

I would bypass the old fuel line with a temporary fuel line. Rust or debris in the tank could be blocking the outlet acting like a flapper valve as weemark suggested.
