Have trans out of the 36 pu and cjhecking the fingers on pressure plate for correct clearance after getting everything bolted to a spare few wheel I notice the fingers have a little free play ,is this normal or should they have tension on them or just pull up on them to set clearance...??tks

Trying to adjust the fingers on the pressure plate is something you would want to leave to the rebuilders that have the proper equipment to that.

Ken is correct on this... the specification for the height of the fingers is called out with specific Johansson Blocks (gauge blocks) installed and the plate pulled down.
Most folks don't have the proper equipment to measure this correctly at home. Prior to retiring, I was fortunate to have access to the proper tools and found many so called "rebuilt" pressure plates were way out of adjustment. So far in fact, the plates would not offer proper disengagement of the disc.
With the labor involved in replacing a poor plate, I would never go "cheap"... if in doubt, buy a new plate AND disc from a reputable service. Fort Wayne Clutch would be my choice....

What he can try is get some 3 to 4. 8mm spacers that represent the thickness of the clutch plate , place these evenly on the flywheel then bolt down the pressure plate then use the handle part of a veneer that slides out and measure from the finger adjuster bolts down to the fly wheel and adjust accordingly. The spacers can be some 8mm square bright stock .Ted

The question was The finger do not have tension on them when plate is compressed but a small amount of play up and down ,,,,, ,I would think this is not normal ,they would be moving around when clutch is released?????

There is a big heavy fixture to adjust pressure plates. I happen to
have one but haven't used it for 30 years. I may be interested in
selling it if the buyer picks it up in Florida. I don't know if K.R.
Wilson or maybe Ford made it.. G.M.

there is some play in the fingers that goes away when you apply the thrust bearing. in order to measure as as I previous described you measure down to the under side of the 8mm stock that crosses the fly wheel ,Ted

it is more important that the fingers be adjusted evenly than thier actual height as you have adjustment in your clutch linkage.you can bolt down pp. to flywheel with clutch you are using and set fingers equal. there should be no free play. fingers should then be tack welded to keep from moving.Fort Wayne Clutch did mine for $25.00. not worth me messing with it only to screw something up. shipping both ways will cost about 27.00 as the clutch and pp. will fit a usps priority box.

This is not entirely true. "Evenly" AND within specification are critical. I have found two plates from Napa that were so far out of specification that neither could be adjusted (linkage) well enough to effect proper operation.
That is precisely WHY there is a specification for the height of the three forks.
Because of those plates aforementioned, I now check each and every one prior to installation.
Fort Wayne is well aware of this specification and as such addresses it with each plate they rebuild.
