1953 motor swap
i have a high milage 1953 Ford 4 door with a ford-o-matic. I will be replacing a much lower milage motor in a 2 door Victoria with a manual transmission with a new motor. i am considering replacing the smokey, low compression high milage motor in the 4 door with the low milage normal compression non smokey motor coming out of the 2 door car.
is there a difference in crankshafts between the auto and manual trans motors? will all i have to do is bolt everything back together? i intend to keep the 2 door as it is a beautifull restored car, the 4 door is rougher but a great handeling/driving car that i will keep for several more years and would like to take on an occasional long trip. the auto transmission has been rebuilt and is in excelent shape. is there anything i need to be aware of to start this adventure?? thank you for any and all help.... don |

Re: 1953 motor swap
There is a difference between the crankshaft in a motor that was originally matted to a Ford-O-Matic. I think (CRS) that the crankshaft in an automatic transmission motor has an indentation to accommodate the torque converter. I'm sure there will be others who can elaborate on the various differences.

Re: 1953 motor swap
Vic has it. The recess in the back of the crank allows for the torque converter but will not interfere with the manual transmission flywheel/clutch installation.

Pilot bearing fits in the flywheel.
