Default Where to buy cast iron Model A brake drums? New to Model As

Can some one tell me where to buy new, quality cast iron brake drums?
I keep hearing that they are very costly. How costly are they?

Another good reason to update your profile. If you happen to be in Los Angeles Mel Gross [email protected], (323)728-5712 advertises them at 4 for $260 on AHOOGA.com.

Snyders, Brattons & Mell Gross in LA has them. Cost approx $100 each. Problem is you need good hubs before you start. If the hub bolts have been welded on you need to find good used or buy new. These are heavy and shipping is expensive. You are better off with new bonded linings on the shoes instead of the old style woven ones. If the rest of the system is like new, you should be able to skid the wheels. I have cast drums on all my cars.

Got mine from Bert's in Denver. They swedged on original hubs. Bought shoes at the same time and had them arced to drums. Replaced all worn parts and rebuilt the mechanical brakes to stock. Can now lock up all four wheels if I want. Very happy with results.

Bought mine from Snyder's but had Bratton's machinist put them together and arc the shoes. It was a long-overdue project and took some fitting to get them right, but it was well worth the effort and expense!

Brattons sells nodular iron drums which are supposed to be better. I had Snyders drums and really liked them. Any cast drum will give better brakes.

We reviewed the cast iron drums in the Model A Times (Vol 2 issue 1 and VOl 4 issue 1), a very good item to install. You got the advice on where to get them above.

Thanks for the input/info guys! Much appreciated!
Was thinking of going to over Hydraulics, but will give this a try.
Was looking at what appears to be the little up grades for the Mech brakes.

Whomever you get the drums from....get the drums with the hubs already installed. Don't fool around trying to re-fit used hubs unless you have the experience and equipment. 50 ton press etc. Order the bearings and seals at the same time from the same supplier. More dollars up-front, but easier on the head in the long run.
Bonded linings would be the way to go. Wish I had done it that way !

Did the same, bought them from Bert's and had them swedged them into my original hubs. Seem to be working fine. You may want to check with them for prices.

No matter who you buy the drums from, you won't need hydraulics.
