I have rebuilt Carburetors for over 30 years, I wish it was as easy as some of the posts indicate; by the time you bead blast the cast iron housings, test to be sure all passage ways are clear, match the upper and lower housings, purchase new gaskets sets, choke drivers, etc.; size the jets, paint the housings using gas resistant paint, install the sized jets, test the floats, , etc., it takes a lot of time and investment. Then when you sell the carb, you guarantee the carb, with no core required, or core charge, then some ask why you ask so much for your carbs ?

Just the opinion of a old Model A'er.

Oh, so true . It is exhausting just reading about the doing of a 'correct' rebuild; which does make a case for purchasing a 'New' carburetor.

You can see you get lots of advice and opinions here. You need to decide how you are going to use your Model A and change the things to fit that choice. You say you want to go back to original, always a good direction but the question is why? Do you plan on showing it, or do you just want to drive it and are unfamiliar with the carburetor and figure the original style is simpler? Once you answer the question to yourself then the direction will be easier to take. we are avid drivers of Model As and have driven over much of the country. We do have a modern carb on our car because it is more efficient and gives a little more performance but have driven over much of the country with a stock carb too. Hope to see you on a tour soon!

One warpy pot metal Tilly was more than enough for me. Car wouldn't idle worth a flip, and nothing that was tried helped any. Found a nice Zenith on a '34 model 'B' panel van in a JY that cleaned up nicely. That carb worked great for several years of daily driving.

No one has mentioned that you will need a stock intake manifold to switch to a updraft (either tillitson, or zenith), and probably some machining of the intake and exhaust manifolds.

Bratton's & Snyder's are selling Zenith Carbs for $425-475. Why is this one only $279??

This interests me... does that eliminate the fuel mixture setting on the choke rod? It looks that way.
