Default Wiper motor blues ...

Howdy fellas,
My vacuum wiper motor is a gonner ,and I'm looking to do something different in my 55 customline. Looking for a way around the mac's Newport engineering 300$ fix. Anyone have a simpler approach. Oh yeah my wiper motor is literally gone. M.i.a
thanks in advance.
Troy

Hi there Troy. I believe Newport conversion is around 200USD for motor and switch. It gets a bit costier if you want an extension to use on the oe knob: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Port-Eng...JT4P8V&vxp=mtr
Anyway, dealt with vac motor problems myself. Never could get the vac motor to work with enough power, but, if you havent already, I believe you might try to dissassemble and lub it well on the inside. Use the search button, other folks have used tranny fluid, WD40 and other lubricants down the hose coming from the fuel pump with results.
I also tryed the route of using another electric wiper motor, but reverse engeneering it is hard in such tight spot as behind the dash.
Good luck.

I built a rod once and used a Pinto two speed wiper motor. It was cheap, but that was many years ago. It worked great, but had no park.

I took the adapter off of a 63? Chevy pickup and it has a double bell crank that turns rotary motion into a oscillating motion that I always thought would be adaptable to replace vacuum wiper motor. Now days the more I think about it a guy should be able to adapt one of those mini van rear wipers to a vacuum linkage.

I have a couple of vacuum wiper motors for $10 each if you want to give them a try. They came from a purchase I made afew years ago from a now closed salvage yard. Rod

Might go over to the HAMB, and run a search. I think there's a 55-56 ford social group, that might be a start. Read the rules and intro stuff first, Ryan's serious over there.

The '55 thru '57 Chevy wiper motors fit the '57 and '58 Ford/Edsel with wiper motors that mount on the engine compartment side of the firewall. Won't work on '56/'55 Fords which are under the dash.

yblocker, do you have a dual fuel pump that has a vacuum booster pump integral with it? If not, new pumps are readily available at your local auto parts store. Make sure you plumb it correctly. You will not be happy with a vacuum wiper motor without the vacuum assist fuel pump. There are rebuilders that advertise in Hemmings who can rebuild that vacuum motor for you. I have had them done successfully and not too pricey; way cheaper than an electric conversion. Vacuum wipers are not ideal, but can work very well if mechanically in good shape.

Putting lube in the vacuum line to lube the motor sounds like a good idea, but I have never had any luck with this. The problem is usually that the leather seal on the flapper wears out or gets dry and cracks. By the way, WD40 is not a lube, it will quickly evaporate and to the extent that it will "act" as a lubricant is temporary at best. If you read the label, it does not claim to be a lubricant. I does claim to quiet squeaks which it will for a short time. (So will water) It is a "Water Displacement" fluid and works very well as such.

Hey motorhead6,
I do have the vacuum pump, I'm missing the wiper motor I pulled it out last summer, grind of the bell crank and the leather diaphragm was gone. I could find another core. However I was looking into modernizing it to an electric 12v to fit the new wiring harness.

And we did have a member that used a rear unit from a van a while back and outlined how to do it you might "get lucky" using the search function in the Group but we lost a lot of information and build pictures when Ryan did the HAMB "upgrade" that sent a lot of tech info into cyber space.

I would not be surprised if you could not adapt this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1955-1956-Ch...3D371485718913 Just some fabrication for mounting would be in order.
